On Saturday, January 10, a team of 10 young and eager AmeriCorps National Civilian Conservation Corps (NCCC) arrived in Little Rock to begin a eight-week project supporting Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center.
The team, including Kara Christie, 18, daughter of Todd and Chris Christie, of Casnovia, Michigan, helped repair and do renovations throughout the camp’s grounds and facilities.
Ferncliff is a Presbyterian camp and retreat that offer summer camps and year round conference centers for non-profit groups, many different churches, and unprivileged and troubled youths.
The team helped insulate, rewire, and renovate four youth cabins at the camp. They also have helped do landscaping around the cabins, including sodding an activity area beside the lake, digging out and constructing a retaining wall to help with drainage, and installing a fence to control traffic. They also helped design and build signs for campers. When not working at the camp, the team helped take care of animals at Little Rock Animal Village, planting at the Village Commons, and working at the Lanterns Festival at Wildwood Park.
“I am extremely proud of the work that we have done at Ferncliff. Knowing we are helping improve this camp for the children and organizations who come here every week is a great feeling,” said Kara.
The team was scheduled to depart on Friday, March 4.
