Alpha Family Center raises $18,000 towards expenses

Walkers and runners hit the pavement on Saturday, June 18, to help support Alpha Family Center, in their annual LifeWalk event.

“It was a great day to celebrate life,” said Executive Director Teresa Hathaway.

“This year’s theme was ‘I’m a prayer warrior for Life,’ which relays the message that we find power through prayer as we walk for the unborn babies.”

The day began with 18 runners taking part in Alpha’s 3rd annual LifeRun. The Springs Youth Pastor Chris Anton awarded the trophies and medals to the top runners. LifeWalk began with a welcome, instructions about the walk, and an opening prayer. A crowd of over 174 walkers followed behind the LifeWalk banner for the two-mile walk through downtown Cedar Springs, stopping at key points to pray for our community leaders, churches, schools and Alpha Family Center. This year the walk once again included a prayer stop at Metron Senior Citizen Center to help emphasize life is precious at all stages. The walkers returned to the park for a time of refreshments and door prizes, as well as awarding prizes to this year’s winners of our coloring contest, and the top walkers.

A report was also given on the total amount raised this year, which was over $18,000. LifeWalk covers a major portion of Alpha’s operating expenses as they assist over 150 families per year, and give away over 11,000 baby and maternity items per year. Alpha also offers free pregnancy self-testing, parenting classes, and support for abuse, miscarriages, and post-abortion and sexual integrity classes. Alpha also hopes to begin a men’s group this fall to help equip and encourage men to actively engage with their families.

LifeWalk ended with a closing prayer and the sky filled with colorful balloons that were released in memory of the over 58,000,000 babies that have been aborted since abortion became legal in 1973.

Alpha offers a special thank you to the local communities for their ongoing support of Alpha over the years.

LifeWalk raises over $13,000 for life

N-lifewalk-2015-photo-banner

Last Saturday, June 20, was a great day to celebrate life, as Alpha Family Center held its yearly fundraising event, LifeWalk.

“Everyone who walked received a “Walk in Love” T-shirt that relays the message that we care about the unborn babies we are walking for,” said Lorrie Shelton, former Executive Director.

The day began with 18 runners taking part in Alpha’s second annual 5 K LifeRun. Chris Anton, youth pastor at The Springs Church, awarded the trophies and medals to top runners. LifeWalk began with a welcome, instructions about the walk, and an opening prayer. A crowd of over 174 walkers followed behind the Lifewalk banner for the 2 mile walk down through the heart of Cedar Springs, stopping at key points to pray for our community leaders, churches, schools and Alpha Family Center. This year the walk route included a prayer stop at Metron Senior Citizen Center that emphasizes life as precious at all stages.

The walkers returned to the park for a time of refreshment, door prizes, face painting, a clown for kids, and a report that included the total amount raised this year, which was over $13,000. LifeWalk covers a huge portion of Alpha’s operating expenses as they assist over 100 families per month, and give away over 18,000 baby and maternity items per year.  Alpha also offers free pregnancy self-testing, parenting classes, support for abuse, miscarriage, post-abortion and sexual integrity classes.

Teresa Hathaway, LifeWalk Coordinator and new interim Executive Director presented the awards for top walker and coloring contest winners.  Lorrie Shelton was honored as she retires from Alpha after twenty plus years of service. “I have enjoyed being a part of this amazing pro-life ministry and thank the community for all the support throughout the years,” she said.

LifeWalk ended with a closing prayer and the sky filled with colorful balloons that were released in memory of the 54,000,000 babies that have been aborted since abortion became legal in 1973.

Community steps up for Lifewalk

N-lifewalk1-photo-webN-Lifewalk3-overhead-webA stream of lime green T-shirts wove its way down through the heart of Cedar Springs on Saturday, June 14. Alpha Family Center held its first 5K LifeRun early with 12 runners participating, and 14 children taking part in the FunRun around the Skinner Field track. Then 180 walkers came out at 10 a.m. to celebrate Alpha’s 18th Lifewalk!

Chris Anton, youth Pastor at The Springs Church, opened the fundraising event with a hearty welcome to everyone for taking time out to support life and to help this worthy cause. He gave the walk instructions, which included stopping at key places to pray for our area churches, schools, city hall, the police station and Alpha Family Center. He reminded everyone to return to Morley Park for a short time of fellowship and heart-felt prayer for the unborn.

The walkers returned to the park for a time of refreshment, door prizes, face painting, a clown, and a report that included the total amount raised this year, which was $11,300.

Kim Ferguson shared her experience as a new peer counselor and the rewards she receives being a part of an organization making a difference in our community.

Jenn Anton, Alpha’s new Lifewalk Coordinator, shared the good news about abortions being down in the state of Michigan. Her closing prayer was for protection of unborn babies as colorful balloons filled the sky in memory of the 54,000 babies that have been aborted since abortion became legal in 1973.

Pledges poured in and walkers showed their support Saturday as 160 residents descended on Morley Park in Cedar Springs for the Alpha Family Center’s annual LifeWalk.

Walkers weaved their way through downtown Cedar Springs, and stopped and prayed at several venues, including City Hall, a church, a school, and Alpha Family Center. They prayed for the leadership and staff and all those places, for students, and the clients helped by Alpha.

“The walk went great,” said Executive Director Lorrie Shelton. “We raised over $12,000.” Those funds help Alpha with operation costs throughout the year. It’s their biggest fundraiser.

Alpha Family Center is a non-profit, faith-based pregnancy care center servicing hundreds in the West Michigan area. Last year, they were able to assist with 3,292 requests for help, giving out over 14,000 free maternity, baby and toddler items.

Their services include free and confidential pregnancy self-testing, peer counseling, community agency referrals, parenting classes and material assistance. They also provide accurate information on abortion, adoption, & sexually transmitted diseases, as well as offer support for those who have experienced sexual abuse, miscarriage and abortions.

For more information or to donate, call 696-2616 or visit their website at http://www.alphafamilycentercs.org. They are located at the corner of First and Cherry Street in Cedar Springs.

Walk for life

The Springs Church was one of the places around the city that walkers stopped to pray during Alpha Family Center’s annual Lifewalk.

Morley Park was the site where Alpha Family Center’s annual Lifewalk fundraiser began and ended on Saturday, June 18. This important fundraiser provides 1/4 to 1/3 of the operating expenses necessary for Alpha to continue offering help and hope to those in need in our community.
“After months of preparation, planning, and publicity, Lifewalk 2011 proved not only to be a beautiful day that brought sunshine, instead of rain, but also $12,000 dollars was pledged!” said Executive Director Lorrie Shelton.
Several areas businesses donated to help underwrite the cost of Lifewalk, while most of the support came from generous donors. “This family friendly event gave over 185 believers the chance to show their pro-life stand, as well as provided a time of fellowship with other believers, regardless of denominational ties,” said Shelton.

Kids had fun at the annual Lifewalk.

Door prizes, cookies, balloons, face painting, candy and a clown kept the children amused, and parents took time throughout the walk to stop and pray for our city officials, police department, public schools, Alpha Family Center and area churches.  Balloons were released at the end of Lifewalk, in memory of the 50 million babies that have been aborted since abortion became legal in 1973.  Shelton said that according to Right to Life, there are 75 babies aborted per day in Michigan.
“Lifewalk is also a time to pray for Alpha that they may continue to help women choose life and to assist teenagers, pregnant mothers, and young families with needed items,” noted Shelton.
For more information on Alpha Family Center, give them a call at 696-2616.
