You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man!

n-gingerbread-men2-bellamy n-gingerbread-men1-bellamy

On Tuesday, December 13, Mrs. Bellamy’s kindergarten class made a gingerbread man cookie after completing a literacy unit including many different Gingerbread Man stories. The kids made signs warning others not to peek while he was baking. But to their utter surprise, the gingerbread man was gone when they went to retrieve him from the oven! This sparked a school wide hunt for the gingerbread man! After following many clues throughout the school, he was eventually found hiding the group room of classroom 408. The children enjoyed eating his legs off first just to ensure that he would not run away again!

Veteran’s Day Celebrations

csps-sweets-for-soldiers-classroom

csps-sweets-for-soldiersOn Thursday and Friday, 11/10-11/11, the students at Cedar View donated their leftover Halloween candy for Sweets for Soldiers – to fill a requested need from our local Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.

In just those two days, we completely filled a maintenance-sized trash can of candy – showing kindness + service to others!   VERY cool.   The candy was sorted, bagged, and weighed by my class last week – and our grand total was 96 pounds of candy!  On Wednesday (11/16), a few students and families were then able to join in the final task of this community service project by driving with me to Grand Rapids and hand-delivering the candy and over 100 Veterans Day Thank You cards to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Shaking hands with individuals who live there was very powerful! It was a privilege to read the monuments and artwork, as well.  Every student should be proud of their work in serving their community and honoring those who have served!

csps-ms-debri-and-ms-bellamy-veterans-dayMrs. Debri’s and Mrs’ Bellamy’s classes created some Veterans Day project pictures. They decorated hearts with tissue paper and glue – great fine motor activity! The papers read, “Thank you for your service! From a Kindergarten student at Cedar Trails Elementary.” They were delivered to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans on November 11, 2016, Veteran’s Day.

Red Hawk Elementary’s Mrs. Biondo’s Social Studies students were singing along to “I’m Proud to be an American” while writing. Mrs. Biondo is very proud of her class, as they all wanted to write more than one letter to Veterans!

Friendsgiving Celebrates Friendship and Giving

CTA kindergarten and first grade students shared their Friendsgiving meal.

CTA kindergarten and first grade students shared their Friendsgiving meal.

CTA kindergarten and first grade celebrated Thanksgiving a little differently this year; instead of the traditional gathering and feast, the teachers and students celebrated “Friendsgiving.” On that day, everyone contributed to making Stone Soup and Friendship Bread. Every student brought in a different ingredient. Each delicious ingredient could only be shared by a particular individual; however, when the ingredients were put together, they became a huge pot of delicious soup or a yummy loaf of bread. Friendship is a wonderful combination of individuality and working togetherness. At the end of the day when the meal was prepared, the students and teachers came together once again and celebrated “Friendsgiving” with a friendship banquet, sharing the soup and bread.

75 acts of kind hands

This year’s Red Flannel theme is “75 years of volunteers.” Kindergarten teacher Rhonda Bellamy decided to take that theme and tie into what her students were learning.

“For 75 years Red Flannel Volunteers have given their time to help others in our community celebrate,” explained Bellamy. To connect this theme to student learning, [we] decided to complete 75 acts of kind hands.”

“Kind hands” is one of the Habits of Mind (behavior model) that Cedar Trails focuses on.

“Students were very eager to volunteer their kind hands by helping others take care of their classroom and their school,” remarked Bellamy. “During the week students picked up extra trash in the lunchroom, pushed in chairs, helped others at recess, and some even talked about ways they were using kind hands at home.”

Bellamy painted their hands and they wrote the kind acts on a large red flannel long john and red flannel nightgown.

Last Friday, the kindergarten class recorded their 75th act of kind hands. What a great way to model the spirit of service in the community!
