WMP wrestlers earn all-state

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to Kalamazoo for the 2018 State Finals this past weekend. WMP entered 25 grapplers to compete and 16 earned All State Recognition. We also had 2 enter the All Girls division, Tatianna Castillo and Hannah Pienton. 52 lb Castillo earned her first State Title in the 7/8 age group and 139 lb Pienton finished 6th in the high school division. 

With over 280 teams competing, WMP is currently ranked as follows: #16 for Most Pins/Least Time with 28 pins in 53.21; #53 for most Tech Falls/Least Time with 2 tech falls in 8.09; #18 for most Pins/Tech Falls/Least Time with 30 in 61.30; #14 for Most total match points with 482 points; and #34 for Winning Percentage—73 wins/34 Losses, 69 percent win ratio.

Individual results are as follows: 63 lb Hunter Eek and 55 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group finished in 8th. Pautke has a season record of 43-10. 49 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished in 7th. Werkema has a season record of 26-10. 75 lb Ian Cook and 59 lb Kellen Weckesser finished in 6th. Weckesser has a season record of 35-18. 70 lb Xavier Carpentier and 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez finished in 5th. Carpentier has a season record of 21-15 and Vasquez has a season record of 38-11. 63 lb Quinten Cassiday, 138 lb Aaron Smith and 65 lb Josh Vasquez finished 3rd. Cassiday has a season record of 52-11 and Vasquez has a season record of 48-9. 67 lb Luke Egan and 75 lb Tyler Parmeter are both a State Runner Up. Egan has a season record of 50-14 and Parmeter has a season record of 33-25. 2018 State Champions are 43 lb Brody Compau, 75 lb Ayden McClurken, 64 lb Drew Moro and 85 lb Blake Peasley. Compau has a season record of 28-11, McClurken has a season record of 41-1, Moro has a season record of 59-5 and Peasley has a season record of 50-8. 

WMP also recognizes Drew Moro and Blake Peasley on earning their 3rd State Title. MYWAY also recognized and awarded Quinten Cassiday, Luke Egan, Ayden McClurken and Blake Peasley a gift for placing in the top four at all of the Greights tournaments for their dedication to the sport. 

“A wrestling season is built on preparation, determination and heart. It is difficult to achieve personal success without the support of each wrestler’s family. Every wrestling family knows you give it your all. A season is not defined on wins and losses but rather watching your athletes move in a positive direction. For a coach, it is the greatest joy to have an athlete run off the mat and into your arms after achieving their goal,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

West Michigan Pursuit wrestlers all place in tournaments

West Michigan Pursuit entered 18 grapplers to wrestle this weekend and everyone one of them placed. 

Drew Moro, 64 lbs, traveled to Oklahoma for Tulsa Nationals. He went 4-2 for the day, and finished in 5th Place. 

Five traveled to Sterling Heights for the Metro Greights tournament and 12 went to Ionia. Metro Greights results: 75 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group finished 4th Place. 59 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group finished 3rd Place. 63 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group finished 2nd Place. Greights Champions are 67 lb Luke Egan and 85 lb Blake Peasley, both in the 9/10 age groups. 

Ionia results: 58 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 novice age group and 63/37 lb Kamden Witte, 9/10 age group finished 4th Place. 65/70 lb Xavier Carpentier, 11/12 age group; 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 72 lb Logan Galinis, 7/8 age group and 95/100 lb Isa Starr, 9/10 age group finished 3rd Place. 63/67 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group; 65/70 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group and 52 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished 2nd Place. Ionia Champions are 43/46 lb Brody Compau and 55 lb Kaleb Pautke, both 7/8 age groups. 

“Our kids have excellent team and sportsmanship qualities. I could not be more proud of this team,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers win medals, championship rings

West Michigan Pursuit had two grapplers travel to Bay County this weekend looking to earn the Monster Medals and Championship rings offered for 1st Place. Both Drew Moro, 64 lb 7/8 age group, and 85 lb Blake Peasley, 9/10 age group, went undefeated and claimed what they came for, each earning another Championship Title. Moro also earned the Most Valuable Wrestler award. 

WMP had 16 grapplers enter the Orchardview tournament and placed 14 in the top 5. Orchardview was also a “Greights” tournament which attracts several tough competitors from all over the state. Isaiah Sostenes, 80 lbs 9/10 age group finished 5th. 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group finished 4th. 67 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 95 lb Blake Hammer, 13/15 age group and 90 lb Isaiah Smith, 9/10 age group finished in 3rd. 71 lb Luke Egan, 9/10 age group; 55 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group; 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group; 59 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group and 67 lb Kamden Witte, 9/10 age group finished in 2nd. Champions of the day are 67 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 46 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group and 70 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

“I see growth in each athlete every week,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “I love having them light up when moves they drill at practice provide the intended result during a live match! We are the Pursuit of Champions,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers place at two events

West Michigan Pursuit split up this weekend to compete at the Mat Mahem Duals and Individual event in Fort Wayne, Indiana and the Grandville tournament. 

Brody Compau wrestled with Team MYWAY Blue, 8U. Compau claimed a victory and his team finished 8th. Drew Moro wrestled on Team MYWAY Red, 8U. He went undefeated for the day and his team finished 3rd. Moro also entered the 61 and 64 lb individual event and claimed Championship titles in both weight classes. Luke Egan and Tyler Parmeter wrestled with Team MYWAY Blue, 10U. Egan claimed 4 victories for the team and finished 4th in the individual. Parmeter claimed a victory for the team and finished 4th in the individual. Their team finished 12th. Blake Peasley wrestled with Team MYWAY Red, 10U. Peasley claimed 3 victories for the team. He finished 3rd in the individual and his team took 6th. Josh Vasquez wrestled for Team MYWAY Blue, 12U. Vasquez claimed 4 victories for the team and finished 3rd in the individual. His team finished in in 12th. Quinten Cassiday and Kaleb Pautke entered both Mat Mahem and Grandville.  Pautke finished 3rd at Mat Mahem in the 8U, 55 lb wt class and claimed a Championship title at Grandville in the 7/8 age group, 55 lb wt class. Cassiday finished 3rd at Mat Mahem in the 10U, 62 lb wt class and 2nd at Grandville in the 9/10 age group, 63 lb wt class. Kellen Weckesser entered Mat Mahem and finished 5th in the 10U, 58 lb wt class. 

Grandville results are as follows: 80 lb Isaiah Sostenes finished 3rd in the 9/10 age group. 75 lb Harper Cheng, 9/10 age group and 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group finished in 2nd Place. Champions of the day are 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 90 lb Isaiah Smith, 9/10 age group and 67 lb Kamden Witte, 9/10 age group. Congratulations to Isaiah Smith, this is his first Championship title! 

“I have been pushing these kids hard this year preparing them for very bright futures. I am very proud of their response. They are competing with some of the best wrestlers in the nation,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

Other wrestlers place at Kentwood

The first tournament of the 2017-2018 MYWA Western Region was hosted by Kentwood wrestling. West Michigan Pursuit brought 16 grapplers to compete with one entering Novice and the rest entering the Open division. One grappler—Drew Moro—traveled to Iowa to compete at the Hawkeye Nationals in Iowa. 

On Saturday, December 2, Drew Moro bumped up an age group and entered the 3rd/4th grade division in the 66 lb wt class, finishing in 2nd Place. On Sunday, he entered his own age group, 1st/2nd grade division in the 65 lb wt class. After two days of tough competition, Moro battled hard and claimed the 2017 Hawkeye Nationals Championship Title. 

At the Kentwood tournament, West Michigan Pursuit placed 15 young competitors in the top three. Out of 60 battles, WMP claimed 43 victories. 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 64 lb Caden Green, 7/8 age group and 90 lb Blake Hammer all finished in 3rd Place. 55 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 85 lb Isaiah Smith, 9/10 age group all finished in 2nd Place. Both Pautke and Parmeter battled back and went 4-1 claiming their True Second. Champions of the day are 67 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 40/46 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 71 lb Luke Egan, 9/10 age group; 90 lb Blake Peasley, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Isaiah Sostenes, 9/10 age group; 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group and 65/70 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

“Each year I have returning champions, more who are training to gain that status and those looking to be a part of the continued success here at WMP.  Looking at the team I have right now, I am very impressed and excited to see what the 2017 season brings,” said Owner and Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers end season at national tournaments

West Michigan Pursuit had wrestlers registered to compete in two different National tournaments last weekend.

Drew Moro traveled to Missouri for the Adidas Nationals. Moro entered the 2nd Grade division in the 61 lb wt class. He went 3-1 for the day, finishing in 2nd Place, and earning All American status. He ended with a 44-11 season record. Moro also entered their Mohawk contest and won with 190 votes.

The rest of the team traveled to Battle Creek for NUWAY Nationals. As a team, West Michigan Pursuit finished 32 out of 297 teams. WMP entered seven wrestlers and five earned All American status by placing in the top 8.

Chayson Eberspeaker entered the 7/8 age group in the 64 lb wt class. He went 2-2 for the day, finishing in 7th Place and ending with a 36-11 season record. Quinten Cassiday entered the 7/8 age group in the 61 lb wt class. He went 4-2 for the day, finishing in 5th Place and ending with a 52-6 season record.

Josh Vasquez and Blake Werkema both finished in 4th Place. Vasquez entered the 9/10 age group in the 59 lb wt class. He went 4-2 for the day and ended with a 48-7 season record. He also made the top 100 for number of pins for the National tournament. He had 3 pins with a combined time of 4:45 out of 1,221 wrestlers. Werkema entered the 4/6 age group in the 47 lb wt class. He went 3-2 for the day and ended with a 50-5 season record.

Kellen Weckesser entered the 7/8 age group in the 54 lb wt class. He went 3-1 for the day, finishing in 2nd Place and ending with a 40-15 season record.

“My mission from the start has always been the Pursuit of Champions,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “I am extremely proud of the success we are having. It’s not always about how these kids win; recovering after an emotional loss and continuing to succeed is equally important. These are valuable life lessons as they continue to grow and mature. I feel fortunate to have so many parents trust me as I try to instill these values into their kids.”

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to the Lansing Center for the 2017 State Finals this past weekend. There were 272 teams and just over 2900 wrestlers registered to compete. WMP is currently ranked #41 as a team. They had 16 individuals enter the tournament and six finished in the top 5, earning All State Recognition.

The following individuals wrestled tough but unfortunately fell short of making it to the placement rounds. Luke Egan won 3 matches; Carter Castillo, Chayson Eberspeaker and Kellen Weckesser all won two matches each and Logan Bennet won a match.

Final placements are as follows:

Quinten Cassiday entered the 61 lb wt class in the 7/8 age group and finished in 5th Place. Cassiday’s season record is 48-4.

Ahmad Starr entered the 138 lb wt class in the High School division and finished 4th Place.

Finishing in third place was 59 lb Josh Vasquez, 9/10 age group, and 46 lb Blake Werkema, 4/6 age group. Vasquez has a season record of 44-5. Werkema’s season record is 47-3, and he also made the top 100 for most pins at the State Finals. He is currently listed at #59 with 3 pins totaling 1:34.

In the 7/8 age group, 58 lb Drew Moro and 67 lb Tyler Parmeter both finished in 2nd Place. Parmeter’s season record is 38-11 and Moro’s season record is 41-10.

State Champion is 75 lb Blake “Beast” Peasley, 9/10 age group, finishing his season with a 48-8 record. This is Peasley’s second State Title, with his first one in the 2014 season.

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to Caledonia for the 2016-2017 Regionals. Twenty-one individuals entered the tournament and 17 placed in the top four, which qualifies them to compete at the State tournament in two weeks at the Lansing Center.

Finishing in fourth place was 90 lb Logan Bennett, 11/12 age group.

In third place was 52 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group.

Finishing in second place was 67 lb Chayson Eberspeaker, 7/8 age group; 122 lb David Erxleben, High School division; 75 lb Blake Peasley, 9/10 age group; 61 lb Selina Stalker, 4/6 age group; and 55 lb Kellen Weckesser, 7/8 age group.

Regional Champions are 61 lb Quinten Cassiday, 7/8 age group; 70 lb Carter Castillo, 11/12 age group; 63 lb Luke Egan, 9/10 age group; 58 lb Drew Moro, 7/8 age group; 67 lb Tyler Parmeter, 7/8 age group; 155 lb Lucus Pienton, High School division; 138 lb Ahmad Starr, High School division; 59 lb Josh Vasquez, 9/10 age group; 46 lb Blake Werkema, 4/6 age group and 158 lb Maston Wood, 11/12 age group.

“My first year running WMP, I had seven individuals qualify with three Regional Champions. Five years later, I have 17 individuals qualifying with 10 Regional Championship titles. These kids and their parents continue to impress me with their neverending support and dedication. The combined efforts are what makes this program a success,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to Lowell and Alma this past weekend. WMP had 3 grapplers enter to compete. Aiden Dowdell took second place in the 155 lb, 13/15 age group; and Selina Stalker finished in third in the 61 lb, 4/6 age group.

The Alma panthers hosted a monster trophy tournament where 13 WMP grapplers entered to compete, placing 11 in the top 4. In fourth place was 52 lb Desmond Smith, 4/6 age group; in third place was 59 lb Landon Foss, 9/10 age group and 72 lb Tyler Parmeter, 7/8 age group. In second place was 67 lb Luke Egan, 9/10 age group; 52 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group, 80 lb Blake Peasley, 9/10 age group and 59 lb Josh Vasquez, 9/10 age group.

Champions of the day were 64 lb Quinten Cassiday, 7/8 age group; 67 lb Chayson Eberspeaker, 7/8 age group; 61 lb Drew Moro, 7/8 age group and 75 lb Isaiah Sostenes, 9/10 age group.

“Judging by the caliber of competition at this tournament, it gives me a great perspective of where we stand within the West Region. I am very proud of the kids who wrestle under me,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers head to state finals

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to Northview for the 2016 Western Regionals this past weekend. Twenty-two grapplers placed in the top five out of the 31 entered, and 21 are moving on to the 2016 State Finals. WMP claimed 58 victories out of 67 battles.

One of the highlights of the weekend was Aaiden Vasquez, who battled back for a true second placement with a record of 5-1. Individual placements are as follows:

Fifth Place medalists include 143 lb Jordan Andrus, High School division, and 80 lb Logan Bennett, 9/10 age group.

Fourth Place medalists include 130 lb Isaac Casey, 9/10 age group; 90 lb Brocke Fisher, 13/14 age group; and 138 lb Patrick Fliearman, High School division.

Third Place medalists include 163 lb Xavier Anderson, High School division; 61 lb Logan Galinis, 6 & under age group; 64 lb Tyler Parmeter, 7/8 age group and 145 lb Zak Schmid, 13/14 age group.

Second Place medalists include 55 lb Quinten Cassiday, 7/8 age group; 155 lb Jacob Galinis, High School division; 115 lb Logan Hull, High School division; 148 lb Lucus Pienton, High School division; and 52 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 6 & under age group.

Western Region Champions are 59 lb Michael Cannon, 9/10 age group; 61 lb Chayson Eberspeaker, 6 & under age group; 58 lb Luke Egan, 7/8 age group; 49 lb Jayden Marcano-Cruz, 7/8 age group; 55 lb Drew Moro, 6 & under age group; 72 lb Blake Peasley, 7/8 age group; 64 lb Isaiah Sostenes, 7/8 age group; and 55 lb Josh Vasquez, 9/10 age group.

Special recognition goes out to Luke Egan, Jayden Marcano-Cruz and Blake Peasley for their 2014, 2015 and 2016 West Regional Champion status.

This year’s Finals will be held at the Kellogg Arena the weekend of April 1-3. The time is here and the focus is on for the Pursuit to the Podium.

Four years later, I have 21 grapplers qualifying with eight Championships. These kids and their parents continue to impress me with their neverending support and dedication. The combined efforts are what make this program such a success.”
