Chargers Own Senior Night, Sweep the Grizzlies

The Creative Technologies Academy boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been known as road warriors, but on February 20th, the Chargers were able to play their one and only “home” game of the season for Senior Night at Grace Bible College.

The girls’ team was up first, taking on the Grizzlies of Grattan Academy. The teams had met twice before during the season, with Grattan coming out with tight victories on each occasion. This time, however, the Lady Chargers were not to be denied. CTA led throughout the entire game, and fought to a 40-32 victory.

It was an emotional night for Charger seniors Olivia Wortz (4 points, 8 rebounds) and Hannah Hubbard (9 points, 7 rebounds). In a very physical game, Wortz and Hubbard kept their composure and used their senior leadership to lead the Chargers to the eight point victory. Junior Aubrey Slocum had the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Holly Fahling chipped in 10 points of her own.

The boys had a fierce battle themselves, as they took on a Grizzlies team who had played them closely in their first two meetings. The Chargers got off to a strong start, leading by as many as 18 in the first half. One key of the game was to slow down the Grattan point guard, and CTA did just that. They forced him into four first half fouls, which made him sit for much of the first half.

The third quarter started off slowly for the Chargers, as Grattan cut the lead down to five on back to back banked in three pointers, but senior Logan Ogden led a Charger run which eventually led them to a 50-34 victory.

Ogden had another double-double for the Chargers with 13 points and 10 rebounds in his last home game. Freshmen Dawson Armstrong finished with a team high 16 points, and sophomore Brandon Beck scored 15 after sitting out the last meeting with the Grizzlies with a sprained ankle.

It was certainly a senior night to remember for Creative Technologies Academy, and it was a great way to go into the offeason.

CTA Boys battle, but fall to the Grizzlies of Grattan Academy

In what has turned into a quite a rivalry over the years, the Chargers put forth their best effort of the year, but it wasn’t quite enough falling 52-46.  Some early misses coupled with some foul trouble to key players led to a slow start, but the Chargers fought through the adversity. “I thought the tempo change in the second quarter utilizing full court pressure and rotation of fresh bodies, coupled with depth, facilitated our comeback.  Our players are inexperienced but work hard in practice to learn their roles with our press and last night we saw some of the fruits from this labor,” explained Coach Bultman after the game.  Fighting is what they did, as they came all the way back and cut the lead to two points with a minute to go, but timely free throw shooting for the Grizzlies ultimately lead to the victory for Grattan.  “I feel we are on the brink of some really good basketball as we drastically reduced our unforced errors,” said Bultman. “With 7 players on the roster who have never played on a basketball team before, this season is a learning experience.  It is great to see the skills improve and see the players come together as a team.”

CTA received a strong game from Dylan Yarrington who led the way with 14 points, and only two turnovers.  Freshman Brandon Beck poured in a career high 15 points, and Derek Winters added 12 points while battling foul trouble. The Chargers have no games next week before they start a very busy stretch on January 28th when they battle the Quad City Mustangs.  The game will be played at the Fremont Rec Center and the game tips at 7:30.
