Youth wrestlers rack up trophies

S-Wrestling-youthThis is the second biggest regular season tournament of the year in Michigan, next to the Super Bowl of Wrestling, which was held last month in Lansing. Cedar Springs continues to prove it is a power to be reckoned with, bringing home a total of 13 trophies, more than any other club in the MYWAY league. Out of those 13, seven were Champions!

Champions this year were Austin Averill, Cody Averill, Landon Demorest, Trevor Marsman, Ryan Ringler, Jordan Ringler, and George Gonzales Jr. The sole runner-up was Allexis Gonzales. Taking third place finishes were Chase Sarniak, Keaton Klaasen and Logan Hull. Rounding out the bunch in fourth place were Pistachio Gonzales and Sam Couturier. Even though wrestling season is slowly winding down, with regionals less than a month away, these Red Hawks are getting geared up to make this the best season yet.

Girls earn national wrestling titles

While most kids were relaxing for spring break, Cedar Springs most successful female wrestlers were tearing up the mat.  Sisters Reese and Allexis Gonzales both qualified in February for the USGWA (United States Girls Wrestling Association) Nationals by taking the Girls State Champion title in their weight classes. Hundreds of girls traveled from all over the nation to compete in the USGWA Nationals held March 31 and April 1, 2012 at the Bowen Fieldhouse of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI.

Reese went 5-0, pinning all of her opponents within the first two periods.  She took Girls National Champion in the 72lb weight class. Allexis was also crowned Girls National Champion in the 99lb weight class with a record of 5-0, pinning all of her opponents. Their father and coach, George Gonzales Sr, who is also the head coach of the Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling Club is very proud of their accomplishments this year and is hopeful that more girls will start participating in wrestling.
