The girls varsity hoops squad finished off their regular season with two games last week winning at Belding on Tuesday night, February 21, 64 to 36 but losing out to West Catholic on Friday, February 25, 46 to 32 in a game between the two best teams in the OK Blue conference.
Cedar enjoyed one of their best first quarter of the season putting up 23 points in the first stanza. Belding came out of the locker room hot, hitting their first four shots to take an early lead. But it was short lived, as the Red Hawks asserted themselves on defense and turned the game around quickly. By halftime, the team led the Redskins 32 to 14.
The second half was much of the same as Cedar stretched their lead to as many as 32 points to come away with the victory.
Rachael Ludtke was high scorer for the Red Hawks with 20 points hitting 8 of 10 from the field, Tiffany Karger followed with 14, and Molly Holtrop was is in double figures with 10. Chaya Coxon scored 7, Brittany Todd 6, Allie Veltkamp 6, and Abby VanDusen 1. Veltkamp led the team with 7 rebounds on the night.
On Friday night, the ladies of West Catholic came to town in a showdown for the OK Blue championship. It was a big game for both teams and both schools were well represented. West brought a big following and it was Red Hawks Kids Club night for the Cedar Springs elementary schools. What a great turn out for a big game.
West got off to an early lead going up 12 to 6 at the end of the first quarter, as the Red Hawks looked a little tight in the beginning of the game. West is a two-time league champion and played like they wanted their third straight. Cedar battled back scoring 12 points in the second quarter but trailed at the half 24 to 18.
The second half was a grind-it-out game, as the West controlled the ball well and ate up the clock. The Red Hawks were able to trim the lead to six points but would get no closer. In the fourth quarter, with time running out, Cedar was forced to foul and West capitalized from the line to put the game away.
Tiffany Karger was high scorer for the Red Hawks, leading the way with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Chaya Coxon chipped in 5, as did Allie Veltkamp. Rachael Ludtke had 4; Hannah Wight had 4, and Molly Holtrop 2.
The girls went to districts on Monday night to face host Mona Shores. Pick up next week’s Post for all the details.
