The Girls track team traveled to Ferris State University for the Pioneer Classic. All four relay teams took first place. Individual winners were Allyson Marvel in the pole vault and Kenzie Weiler set a new meet record in the 3200 meter run, while winning the event. Aly Hamilton placed second in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Other Second place winners were Marissa Oakes in the long jump and Tara Tepin in the 300 meter hurdles.

On Monday May 19 the team traveled to Belding for the 9-10 invite. They placed seventh out of 10 teams. The 400 meter relay team of Allison Hall, Aaliyah Sargent, Allyson Marvel and Tara Tepin placed second.

Also Placing:

3rd: 3200 meter relay team of Aaliyah Sargent, Jenna Heintzelman, Ellie Ovokaitys, and Hannah Heintzelman; 1600 meter relay team of Aaliyah Sargent, Hannah Heintzelman, Jenna Heintzelman and Tara Tepin.

4th place: Tara Tepin high jump; Allyson Marvel pole vault; Aaliyah Sargent 400 meter dash.

5th place: Allyson Marvel 100 meter hurdles; Hannah Heintzelman 1600 meter run.

Weiler breaks school record, heading to state finals


Junior Kenzie Weiler won the 3200 meter run in a school record time of 10:46.86 and qualified for the MHSAA State Finals.

The Girls track team traveled to Houseman Field Grand Rapids to compete in the MHSAA Regional meet on Friday May 17. The team scored 46 points to finish seventh out of 15 teams.

Junior Kenzie Weiler was the lone Red Hawk to win a championship by winning the 3200 meter run in a school record time of 10:46.86 and qualified for the MHSAA State Finals on Saturday May 31 at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids. Maddie Pekrul placed fifth in the 3200 meter run and also qualified for the state finals with her personal time of 11:48.23. Also qualifying for the state meet was the fourth place 3200 meter relay team of Hannah Heintzelman, Shayne Mann, Maddie Pekrul and Kenzie Weiler.

Other placers at the Regional meet:

Fourth: Aly Hamilton 100 meter dash; 400 meter relay team of Marissa Oakes, Taylor Vanlangen, Abby Olszewski and Aly Hamilton.

Fifth: 1600 meter relay team of Hannah Heintzelman, Emily Shaft, Kenzie Weiler and Tara Tepin.

Sixth: Tara Tepin 100 meter dash; Allyson Marvel 100 meter hurdles; 800 meter relay team of Marissa Oakes, Taylor Vanlangen, Abby Olszewski and Aly Hamilton.

Seventh: Aly Hamilton 200 meter dash.

Eight: Marissa Oakes 100 meter hurdles; Tara Tepin 300 meter hurdles.

On Tuesday, May 13, the team hosted the OK Bronze JV meet. Allie Colley took two first places, winning the shot put and discus. Ellie Ovokaitys won the 1600 meter run. Placing second was Tara Tepin in the 400 meter dash and Aaliyah Sargent in the 200 meter dash; the 400 meter relay team of Allison Hall, Aaliyah Sargent, Jennifer Heintzelman and Tara Tepin; along with the 1600 meter relay team of Allison Hall, Jennifer Heintzelman, Ellie Ovokaitys and Aaliyah Sargent.

The team competes on Friday May 23 at Ferris State University in the Pioneer classic and Tuesday May 27 at Greenville in the Daily News meet.

Lady Red Hawks win meet, take second at invite

Improving weather had the Girls track team competing three times last week. The team split a pair of OK Bronze dual meets. The Lady Red Hawks lost a close meet to Greenville 75 to 62, at home, on Tuesday April 22, and they traveled to Northview and defeated the Wildcats 100 to 36. The team’s dual meet record is now 2 and 1 in the OK Bronze.

On Saturday, April 26, the team traveled to Remus Chippewa Hills, for the eight team Warrior Invite. The team scored 118 points and earned the second place trophy. The host Warriors won the meet. Senior Aly Hamilton won the 100-meter dash, while Junior Kenzie Weiler won the 3200-meter run. Junior Marissa Oakes placed second in long jump and Weiler also took second in the 1600-meter run.

The girls track team completed an amazing season with a 5-1 record, with the one loss only being by two points. Even though practice started inside because of the weather, everyone of these girls were able to rise above and run, jump and throw their best.

Two school records were broken—Tara Tepin in the 200m dash and the 400 relay of Tara Tepin, Maddie Vandusen, Bailey Lachniet and Sienna Wight.

The 7th grade track team finished 5th at their conference meet, with very few points separating 2nd through 6th place.

For the second year in a row, the 8th grade track team finished as conference champions, making school history as the first time a girls track team has won back to back championships.

Coaches Weiler and Weiler are very proud of how all these girls ran, competed and the sportsmanship they portrayed. “It was an honor to coach this group of young ladies,” they said.

Weiler, Oakes win all-conference honors


The Cedar Springs Red Hawks girl’s track team hosted the first OK Bronze Conference track meet last weekend. The team scored 68 points and placed fourth in the meet. The final overall standings in the OK Bronze was fourth out of the six teams. Forest Hills Eastern won the conference meet and was first in the conference overall.

Senior Katie Weiler was the only event winner for the Red Hawks and earned all conference honors by winning the 3200-meter run. Katie also placed second in the 1600 run and teamed up with Allie Veltkamp, Ellie Ovokaitys and Maddie Pekrul to place second in the 3200 meter relay.  Sophomore Marissa Oakes also earned all conference. Marissa placed 4th in the long jump, 6th in the 100 meter hurdles and was a member of the third place 400 meter relay and fifth place 800 meter relay team.

Girls Track defeats Northview


 

 

The girls track team traveled to Forest Hills Eastern for a triple dual meet. The girls defeated Northview 102 to 34 but lost to both Forest Hills Eastern and Greenville. The team’s record is now even at 2 wins and 2 losses.

Placing first against Northview for the Red Hawks was Katie Weiler in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs. Maria Oakes had two individual firsts in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Abby VanDusen was also a double winner in the pole vault and long jump. Seniors Kaitlyn Twork and Jeanette Sukstas won both throws. Kaitlyn won the discus and Jeanette won the shot put. The team won all four relay events against Northview.

The team hosts the Red Hawk Invite Saturday, May 4, at Red Hawk Stadium. Field Events start at 9:00 with the Boys Pole vault and running events start at 11:00 with the 3200 Relay. Running finals for the other events will start at noon.

3rd  place: Kaitlyn Twork, Shot put; Briana Pierson, High Jump; Shayne Mann, 1600 and 3200 meter runs; Maddie Burkwalt, 100 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles; Christina Dean, 800 meter run.

Two girls earn All State honors at MHSAA track finals

On Saturday June 2, sisters Kenzie and Katie Weiler placed in the top 8 in the 3200-meter run to earn all state honors. Kenzie, a freshman, place third, with a time of 10:52.88. Katie, a junior, placed seventh, with a personal best time of 11:04.54. Katie will also earn Academic All-State honors for her finish at the meet and her 4.0 grade point.

Sophomore Aly Hamilton advanced to the semi finals in the 100-meter dash and placed ninth overall in the event. The 400-meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Marissa Oakes, Abby VanDusen and Aly Hamilton placed 11th with a time of 51.21.

The team had an outstanding year, winning the OK Blue Conference for the first time in school history. They broke five school records and many grade level records. Congratulations to all of the team members for a memorable season.

Girls track second at Belding, sets records at Big Rapids


The underclassmen on the Red Hawk team traveled to Belding on Monday May 21 and took second place in the meet with 88 points. The host Redskins won the meet with 120 points.  Aly Hamilton won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and set new meet records in both events with times of 13.14 and 26.88.  The 400 meter relay team of Taylor Vanlangen, Sayge Wight, Marissa Oakes and Aly Hamilton took first place and set anew meet record with a time if 52.4.

Marissa Oakes also took two first places by winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. The 3200-meter relay team of Emily Shaft, Shayne Mann, Caitlyn McClurken and Maddie Pekrul also placed first.

Second: Marissa Oakes long jump; Maddie Pekrul 3200 run; 1600 Relay team of Emily Shaft, Caitlyn McClurken, Mara Ellison, and Aly Hamilton.

Girls set records at Big Rapids

Friday, May 25, the girls track team competed in the Pioneer Classic at Ferris State University. In the non scoring meet the team brought home seven first place finishes, set two meet records and set one new school record. Kenzie Weiler set a new school and meet record in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:01.85 while winning the event. Katie Weiler won the 3200 run and set a new meet record of 11:23.31. Aly Hamilton won the 100 meter dash and Kenzie Weiler was the other individual winner in the 800 meter run.

The team also won three relays on the night. The 400 meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Marissa Oakes, Abby VanDusen placed first. The 3200 meter relay team of Maddie Pekrul, Kayla Ovokaitys, Katie Weiler, and Kenzie Weiler started off the running events by taking first. The 1600 meter relay team of Emily Shaft, Aly Hamilton, Rieley Hondalus, and Kenzie Weiler closed off the night by winning with the third fastest time in school history with a time of 4:11.4.

Track team makes history with conference championship

The Cedar Springs Red Hawk girls track team won their first conference championship in school history, on Friday May 11, at Belding. The team scored 128 points to finish ahead of West Catholic, who scored 112. The victory in the conference meet, combined with an undefeated league dual record, gives the team the outright OK Blue Championship. The Red Hawk girls track team won its first conference championship in school history at Belding, on Friday May 11. The team scored 128 points to finish ahead of West Catholic, who scored 112. The victory in the conference meet, combined with an undefeated league dual record, gives the team the outright OK Blue Championship. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches on an excellent season!

The team won 6 events and 8 girls earned all conference honors. On Thursday, the 3200-meter relay team, of Sommer VanDyke, Maddie Pekrul, Katie Weiler and Kenzie Weiler, earned the first winning performance of the meet with a new school record time of 9:42.68. Senior Rieley Hondalus then won the long jump with personal best of 16 feet 1 inch. On Friday night, the 400-meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Marissa Oakes, Abby VanDusen and Aly Hamilton took the next first place and set a new school record with a time of 51.67. Freshman Kenzie Weiler earned three first places Friday night by  winning the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter runs.

Earning all conference honors was Kenzie Weiler, Katie Weiler, Sommer VanDyke, Maddie Pekrul, Rieley Hondalus, Marissa Oakes, Abby VanDusen and Aly Hamilton. The team next competes in the MHSAA Regional meet at Houseman Field on Friday May 18. Field events and prelims start at 1:30 with running finals starting at 5:00.
