Police search for driver that hit child



The boy was hit on Maple Hill Road, north of Lake Montcalm Road, by a Ford F150 or similar vehicle.

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for the driver that hit a child on his way to school last week Wednesday.

According to police, the hit and run occurred about 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, on Maple Hill Road, north of Lake Montcalm Road, in Reynolds Township. 

Police said that an 11-year old was walking southbound with his brother along the right side of the road edge in the grass on Maple Hill Road headed to the bus stop. As he and his brother walked, the 11-year old was struck by a southbound vehicle. The vehicle continued on Maple Hill Road and made a left turn onto Lake Montcalm Road. The boys continued to school. When Tri County Schools learned of the incident, they contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

Police found vehicle parts at the scene. The vehicle is believed to be a 2007 to 2014 Ford F150 or similar vehicle. The color of the vehicle is unknown as witnesses stated it was dark at the time of the crash. 

The boy sustained minor injuries and his family was tending to his medical needs.

Two people were killed in an accident on Northland Drive just north of 15 Mile Tuesday.

Slippery roads may have played a part in the deaths of two people involved in a crash on Northland Drive near 15 Mile Road Tuesday.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, a 1963 Ford Fairlane was headed north on Northland Drive about 4:12 p.m. Tuesday, when it crossed the centerline just north of 15 Mile Road, and was struck by a southbound Ford F150 truck.

The driver of the Ford Fairlane, Duane Schwartz, 68, of Sand Lake, and his passenger, Cathy Sutton, 57, of Gaines Township, were both ejected from the car and died of their injuries at the scene. The Ford Fairlane was not equipped with seatbelts.

The driver of the Ford F150, Renee Regan, 51, of Kentwood, was not injured in the crash.

Traffic was diverted for several hours Tuesday after a fatal crash on Northland Drive near 15 Mile Road.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. The accident is still under investigation.

Northland Drive was shut down between 15 Mile and 16 Mile, and then later 15 Mile and Indian Lakes for several hours.

Assisting at the scene was Courtland Fire and Rescue, Cedar Springs Fire and Rescue, Rockford Ambulance, and the Kent County Road Commission.

Man sentenced in crash that killed 2-year-old

A Howard City man was ordered to spend 20 days in jail and two years on probation as the result of an accident that killed a two-year-old boy.

John Gilbert Heeringa was sentenced Friday, January 10 on the charge of moving violation causing death, a misdemeanor.

The crash occurred in Nelson Township on June 25. Paula Zuniga, 33, was traveling westbound on 17 Mile in a red Ford Explorer with her three children about 10:15 a.m., when the gray Ford F150 that Heeringa was driving northbound on Myers Lake Avenue ran the stop sign and hit Zuniga’s vehicle. Two-year-old Oscar was ejected from his car seat and died at the scene. Three-year-old Alex Salgado was transported to the hospital with serious head injuries, and both one-year-old Gretta Salgado and Paula Zuniga were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Heeringa may have been distracted by his dog, which was in the cab of the truck.
