Student Athletes of the Month

Emilee Pastoor was named October Student Athlete of the Month for the Equestrian Team.  Emilee is the daughter of Rob & Sarah Pastoor.   She is one of the top scoring riders for the season and the high scoring rider for the Region C Meet.  Coach Ream comments “Emilee has been  a huge asset to the team.  She is very versatile and willing to try  anything  for the sake of the team.  She and her pony “Sky” are an amazing team, trying everything from showmanship to speed classes this year.”  Emilee  also has a 3.89 GPA and is a member of the NHS.

Dallas Mora was named the October Student Athlete of the Month for Boys Cross-Country.  Dallas is the son of Lee & Shelli Mora.  Coach Lacy comments “Dallas has put in more work in this season than anyone I have ever coached in my two years at Cedar Springs.  He ran almost every day all summer long and has been rewarded for it. Improved from 17:45 last year to 16:36 already this year.  He is a perfect example of how hard work can triumph over talent.  I am very proud of what he has accomplished so far this season.” Dallas also runs track at Cedar Springs and is a member of the ALC.

This year’s Equestrian seniors are: (L to R) Bayley Wolfe, Jordan Stevens, Logan Amelia, Courtney Piatt and Nicole Kaupa.

The Cedar Springs High School Equestrian Team competed last weekend in the MIHA Region C Championships in Midland. The weather was perfect and a great time was had by all. The team ended with a 4th place finish in the “A” division.

Senior Bayley Wolfe led the team in points, with sophomore Ashlee Warlick and senior Courtney Piatt adding quite a few points of their own.

Assistant Coach Danni Naffziger had this to say about her team: “We had a great time in Midland. We had a teammate that was not able to go, which required other teammates to step up and fill those spots and everyone was willing to try new things. Jesseka Ruiter took her speed horse in the jumping and gained more points for the team. Ashlee Warlick tried bareback. Logan Amelia had a crash course this week in Reining. Raine Gregware gave trail a go. Everyone just stepped up to the plate and we couldn’t be more proud of what this team has achieved.”

Seniors on the team are Logan Amelia, Nicole Kaupa, Courtney Piatt, Jordan Stevens and Bayley Wolfe.

The coaches would like to thank the parents for their time and support this season.

Naffziger will be stepping down from her coaching duties as life takes her in a different direction with a new job. “I would like to personally thank Danni on behalf of the team for the amazing amount of support she has given this us,” said Coach Emily Ream. “She has selflessly given of her time and energy for the team, and I’m still in denial that she’s leaving. We will miss you Danni! Good luck!”

The Cedar Springs High School Equestrian Team battled with Rockford the past two weekends at the MIHA District 5 Meets. At the first meet, the Red Hawks had a wonderful showing, beating the Rams by 10 points (174-164). The second meet was a dead tie (151-151), and Rockford edged out Cedar Springs by 2 points (155-157) at the third meet. However, scores are cumulative and Cedar Springs won the District trophy by 8 points. The Red Hawks will head to Regional competition in Midland, Sept. 26-28.

Senior Bayley Wolfe had a great meet 1 and 2, winning 7 of her 16 classes and not placing below 4th place in the rest. Seniors Courtney Piatt and Nicole Kaupa also boosted the team’s score with very consistent placings. Speed riders Jesseka Ruiter and Jordan Stevens helped keep the Red Hawks on top, especially at Meet 3.

Coach Emily Ream had this to say about her team: “We had a great Meet 1 and 2, struggled a little bit at Meet 3. The weather at Meet 3 was cold and super muddy, so the team and their horses had to trudge through some nasty muck. I’m very proud of all of our riders! They kept a great attitude all day, trying new classes, as I needed them. One of our freshmen, Emilee Pastoor, was thrown in a totally new discipline and kept a smile on her face the whole time. That’s what it means to take one for the team! We are very excited for Regionals!”

Ream offered special thanks to coaches Danni Naffziger, Liz Gear and Kylie Piatt, and said the team would also like to thank Lisa Taylor for all her generosity toward the team.
