Missing man’s body found in Horseshoe Lake


Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Lakeview Post are investigating a drowning in Montcalm County’s Belvidere Township. 

Troopers responded to a missing person report on August 30 at approximately noon, where a 45-year-old male was reported missing from 730 Cedar Lake Rd. after not being seen since about 1:30 a.m.    

MSP canine teams responded to the location and began searching the wooded area behind the residence. The MSP Aviation Unit also responded, using a drone to aid in the search.  The drone camera detected possible areas to search in Horseshoe Lake. The MSP Marine Services Team responded to the area and located the victim in Horseshoe Lake, approximately 40 feet offshore in approximately in 13 feet of water during the evening hours of August 30.

The 45-year-old victim was identified as John Williams of Greenville, MI.  It is believed alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Cedar Springs man drowns in boating accident


A 34-year-old Cedar Springs man drowned Saturday on the Muskegon River, in Mecosta County.

According to the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, they were dispatched to the boat launch on 205th Ave south of Hayes road, in Mecosta Township, about 6:42 p.m. Saturday, August 22, for a boating accident/drowning.

Deputies learned that Daniel Cyranoski, a 34 year-old man from Cedar Springs, was the only occupant of the boat when it flipped over while traveling down the Muskegon River. He was seen wearing a life jacket, which was reported to have come off during the incident. The victim was seen swimming towards shore when he went under the water and did not come back up. 

The Mecosta County Dive Team was activated and searched the water for several hours before stopping for the evening. It was reactivated about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, August 23, for recovery purposes. 

Deputies utilized a side scan sonar with the assistance of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources-Law Division. Officers identified a possible location of the boater in approximately 10 feet of water, approximately 25 yards from the boat wreckage. The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was assisted by members of the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the body of the 34-year-old missing boater was recovered about 8:24 a.m. His body was then turned over to the Medical Examiner to complete their investigation.  

Mecosta County Deputies were assisted by several agencies both Saturday and Sunday, including The Mecosta Township Fire/Rescue; Mecosta County EMS; Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office; Mason County Sheriff’s Office; Big Rapids Department of Public Safety – Fire Division; Big Rapids Township Fire and Drone team; Mecosta County Hovercraft Team; Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol; Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office Posse; Chippewa Fire; Department of Natural Resources; Morley Fire; Morton Township Fire; Newaygo County Dive Team; and Newaygo County Marine Patrol.

Man drowns in boating accident at Crystal Lake


A Perrinton man drowned last week Thursday afternoon trying to save a woman who fell out of their boat.

According to the Michigan State Police Post in Lakeview, the incident happened at Crystal Lake, in Montcalm County’s Crystal Township, about 2:34 p.m. Thursday, June 4.

Police said that a 54-year-old woman had fallen from a fishing boat and into the water on Crystal Lake. The 59-year-old man operating the boat jumped into the water after the woman had fallen in. The woman, who was not injured, was pulled from the water and into a passing boat by citizens who arrived to help.

The man, Kelly Schaffer, 59, of Perrinton, in Gratiot County, was also pulled from the water and into the passing boat. Citizens began CPR on him before EMS arrival, but he was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Life jackets were not worn by the fishing boat occupants.  The incident remains under investigation.

In addition to the citizens on scene, troopers were assisted by Crystal Twp. Fire Department, Montcalm County EMS, Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office and Montcalm County Central Dispatch.

Two men escape drowning in Whitefish Lake


Two men from Cadillac almost drowned Monday when they fell through the ice at Whitefish Lake in Pierson.
According to the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post, troopers responded to the incident at 8 a.m. December 20. David Rush, 48, and Larry Martin, 66, both of Cadillac, were riding on a Polaris 800 Ranger with a cab when it fell through the ice. Montcalm County Rescue were the first on the scene. Police said both men got to shore on their own, and were we but not injured.
The vehicle is submerged in the lake and will be removed by the owner when conditions allow.

Cedar Springs man drowns in lake


A Cedar Springs man drowned last week, in a Montcalm County lake.

According to the Michigan State Police Post in Lakeview, they responded to the scene at Winfield Lake at 6:12 p.m. August 19, on a report of a possible drowning. Initial attempts to locate the victim were unsuccessful, and he was later located about 30 feet from shore by the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office dive team. The Howard City Police Department, Alpha 8 and Rescue 29 also assisted at the scene.

The victim was Bruce Parks, 36, from Cedar Springs. Alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the incident, but the autopsy results had not been released at press time.

Parks is survived by his children, Justin Parks, Corey Parks, David Kindle, Eathen Kindle, Thomas Kindle, and Dillon Tinkham; and several other relatives. Memorial services will be held at the Pederson Funeral Home on Thursday, August 26, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
