The GRCC Men’s Cross Country team made a run into the post season and placed 24th overall as a team at the NJCAA Division I National Championship this past fall. As a team, the Raiders finished as one of the top MCCAA schools represented, just behind Macomb and Lansing at the National Championship.

The Raiders add Dallas Mora from Cedar Springs High School to the roster for 2018-19. Mora lettered in Cross Country, as well as Track & Field for the Red Hawks.

Mora was recognized for many team and individual awards during his senior season. He helped his team take home trophies from the Spartan Invitational, the Red Hawk Invitational, and the Kent/Ottawa County Championship, as well as a second place finish at the Carson City Invitational. Additionally, the Cedar Springs Men’s Cross Country team finished 10th overall at the State Championship.

Mora was named All-Conference, as well as second team All-Area during his senior season. He finished out his season with a time of 16:31, placing 43rd at the State Championship meet, while earning his best time and highest placing in three years of racing.

With Mora’s best times coming in during the end of his high school career, the Raiders are excited to have him join the team and help continue their success!

He ended his high school vaulting career as an All-State vaulter, earning a 5th place finish with a vault of 13’10”.  Next fall he will be heading to Michigan State University to study engineering as part of the Air Force ROTC program.

Student Athletes of the Month

Emilee Pastoor was named October Student Athlete of the Month for the Equestrian Team.  Emilee is the daughter of Rob & Sarah Pastoor.   She is one of the top scoring riders for the season and the high scoring rider for the Region C Meet.  Coach Ream comments “Emilee has been  a huge asset to the team.  She is very versatile and willing to try  anything  for the sake of the team.  She and her pony “Sky” are an amazing team, trying everything from showmanship to speed classes this year.”  Emilee  also has a 3.89 GPA and is a member of the NHS.

Dallas Mora was named the October Student Athlete of the Month for Boys Cross-Country.  Dallas is the son of Lee & Shelli Mora.  Coach Lacy comments “Dallas has put in more work in this season than anyone I have ever coached in my two years at Cedar Springs.  He ran almost every day all summer long and has been rewarded for it. Improved from 17:45 last year to 16:36 already this year.  He is a perfect example of how hard work can triumph over talent.  I am very proud of what he has accomplished so far this season.” Dallas also runs track at Cedar Springs and is a member of the ALC.

Two Cross Country runners qualify for state finals

Red Hawk Cross Country runners Ellie Ovokaitys and Dallas Mora qualified for the state finals.

Red Hawk Cross Country runners Ellie Ovokaitys and Dallas Mora qualified for the state finals.

Two Cedar Springs High School cross country runners finished regionals with a treat, after a tricky race day on October 31.

The Cedar Springs Cross Country team and supporters traveled north to Gaylord on a cold, wet, ghoulish Halloween day. The girls and boys teams competed in the MHSAA Regional race for a chance to race one more time before ending their season. There were many pleasing results, despite the blustery weather the runners had to endure.

“I’m very pleased with my team’s performances,” boasted Coach Marie Covey. “Nearly all of the girls ran their fastest race of the season.” Ellie Ovokaitys not only ran her best race of the season, but ran well enough to be a qualifier for the State Finals this coming Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

Also, qualifying is Dallas Mora from the boy’s team. (See other story on this page.) Congratulations Ellie and Dallas.
