Leading to the end of the Red Hawks boys tennis season was the conference meet on Saturday, October 3.

“As is the traditional weather situation, the winds were gusting and wind chills were in the 30’s. Great tennis weather!” remarked Coach Katie Unsworth.

The team’s conference record going in to the tournament was 4-4-1, and they were tied with Northview for 3rd place. “Despite the weather conditions, the boys were able to get in some decent matches but at the end of the day, finished 5th overall, due to some upset matches with Greenville,” said Unsworth.  First singles Blake Fisk received the all-conference award for the Red Hawks team. Taking first and second in the conference meet were Forest Hills Northern and Forest Hills Eastern.

The final tournament of the varsity boys tennis season was the regional tournament held in Big Rapids on Thursday, October 8.

A 2015 regional realignment made the idea of going to state an actual achievable goal for the Red Hawks!” noted Unsworth. “Competition included:  Petoskey, Cadillac, Bay City John Glen, Clio, Goodrich and Fremont. It was an exciting day of tennis with six out of seven flights advancing to the second round. The #1 Doubles team Dylan Kolasa and Jared Liggett managed to upset the number two seed Clio in an epic two set battle. The two players had brought their ‘A’ game and took out the competition from Clio but unfortunately succumbed to the superior skills of Petoskey in the final round. Kolasa and Liggett took second place overall in the #1 doubles flight. Way to go guys. All of the boys played extremely well and, as it turned out, the Red Hawks came in third place.  The top two teams, whom advanced to the state tournament, were Petoskey and Cadillac.”

She said the team would be losing two seniors this year: Blake Fisk and Ethan Brown. “But with eight returning senior players next year, we have our eyes set on State. Thank you guys for an incredible season this year!” added Unsworth.

Their final match record was 7-4-1.

The Cedar Springs Varsity boys tennis team played a home match with Kenowa Hills on Wednesday September 30, which ended in a 5-3 win for the Red Hawks. Winning flights were #1 singles Blake Fisk, #3 singles Drew French, #1 doubles Jared Liggett/Dylan Kolasa, #2 doubles Ethan Brown/Nick Hibbs and #3 doubles Jon Baculy/Tim Shovan. Coach Katie Unsworth commented, “At #1 singles, Blake Fisk fought some tough competition in the first set, but honed in on a strategy in the second set to defeat his opponent 6-4, 6-2.  At #2 Singles, Karsen Dingman had a bigger battle, with his stomach causing him problems, but being the trooper that he is, was able to make somewhat of a comeback in the second set, final score 1-6, 4-6.  Drew French had a not too surprising win again at #3 singles, with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Nice job Drew! 1, 2, and 3 doubles all won their flights. These doubles teams all play some exciting matches and they are fun to watch! Hail to the victors: Dylan Kolasa and Jared Liggett (1 Doubles), Ethan Brown and Nick Hibbs (2 Doubles) and Jonathon Baculy and Timothy Shovan (3 Doubles). At 4 Doubles, Dane Conely and Alex Robinson had an epic battle for the first set but lost the set tie break 7-3.  Even though the score does not reflect it, they had a great match (7-6, 6-1) Way to go Red Hawks!”

The Cedar Springs varsity boys tennis team continued their season with three separate matches last week. On Monday, September 14, the Red Hawks traveled to Lamar Park for a match against Wyoming Park that resulted in a 7-1 win for the team. All flights won their matches except for #4 singles Austin Nielsen, who is out with an injury.

On Wednesday, September 16, the Red Hawks played a home match with Greenville that resulted in a 5-3 win for the team. Number 1 singles Blake Fisk, #2 singles Karsen Dingman, #3 singles Drew French, #1 doubles Jared Liggett & Dylan Kolasa and #2 doubles Ethan Brown & Nick Hibbs all had wins against Greenville.

The next day the boys were back in action when they traveled to Sparta for a match that began with a change in their line-up due to two players out for illness and injury.  Number 1 doubles Jared Liggett & Dylan Kolasa were moved to singles and all doubles teams moved up a spot. The Red Hawks played their best at new positions but lost 2-6.

Coach Katie Unsworth was proud of the way the boys handled the line-up change with Sparta and said, “The boys were very busy this week, with their toughest match being against Sparta because of the missing players at #1 and #4 singles. Rather than forfeiting two flights, the team decided that they would slide up and play at the position above them. This was the best match so far of the season! Play was spectacular and every court had a very competitive match! Ethan Brown & Nick Hibbs playing at #1 doubles and Tim Shovan & John Baculy playing at #2 doubles came away with wins. Dylan Kolasa rocked at #3 singles, losing in an incredible third set tie breaker (6-1, 1-6, 6-8). Jared Liggett made his #4 singles competitor work extremely hard for his win (4-6, 4-6) and #3 doubles team, Dane Conely and Alex Robinson came in with a very respectable score of (2-6, 4-6).”

The Cedar Springs boys varsity tennis team reached the halfway mark to their season last week with a match against Forest Hills Eastern and an invitational at Hamilton High School.

On Wednesday September 9, the Red Hawks competed against Forest Hills Eastern on home courts, which resulted in an 0-8 loss for the Red Hawks.

On Saturday September 12, the Red Hawks traveled to Hamilton High School for an invitational. Several of the Cedar Springs players had very close sets with their opponents. Red Hawk players finishing in second place were #2 singles Karsen Dingman, #3 singles Drew French, #4 singles Austin Nielsen and #2 doubles Ethan Brown and Nick Hibbs. Overall the Cedar Springs Red Hawks came in third place competing against Coopersville, Hamilton and Coloma schools.

“Boys tennis faced some tough competition with a loss to Forest Hills Eastern this week,” noted Coach Katie Unsworth. “At the Hamilton Invitational #2, #3, #4 singles and #2 doubles all took second place and individual medals. #4 singles Austin Nielsen was well on his way to taking first place overall in his flight when unfortunately during his third match suffered a severe sprained ankle. This injury takes him out for the next two weeks. The boys played well. I would like to compliment Jon Baculy who had some incredible winning shots in his match Saturday! I’d also like to compliment Timothy Shovan and Alex Robinson on their tenacity at the net! Way to play guys. We have a talented team and its really quite fun watching all the guys play!”

Cedar Springs tennis team adds another win

#3 singles Drew French (sophomore) backhands a ball to his FHN opponent.

The Cedar Springs varsity boy’s tennis team started the week out on a positive note when they played a home match against Big Rapids on Monday, September 8 and picked up a 7-1 win. Honorable mention goes to #1 singles player Blake Fisk, who made a valiant effort to make the final score 8-0 by going into a lengthy second set, with his Big Rapids opponent, that ended with a 10-point tie-breaker.

On Thursday, September 11, the team traveled to Forest Hills Northern, where the Red Hawks made a terrific effort to match the skills of a talented FHN team consisting of several seniors, but fell in the end with a 0-8 loss. The Cedar Springs boy’s tennis team is young, and of the 12 Red Hawk players, #2 singles Nick Fennessey is the only senior on the team this year. Coach Katie Unsworth gave the boys good advice after the FHN match by telling them to think about how they played against FHN and use what they learned that day to further improve their playing strategies in upcoming matches.
