CS Youth wrestlers place at Rockford


Cedar Springs Youth Wrestlers that won at the Rockford Open and Novice tournament last weekend.

CSYWC had 39 wrestlers head to Rockford to compete in the RYWC Open & Novice tournament Sunday, December 17th joining 72 teams from all over the state. There were 528 wrestlers looking for the top spots in their weight classes.

“We had lots of wrestlers out today and we saw a lot of great matches. We had a handful of wrestlers step on the mat to compete for the very first time and they wrestled very well. We went 68-63 today but had 26 medal. I can’t wait to see how everyone progresses throughout the season,” said Coach Jake Marsman.

Taking home the 4th place medals for the team were Brycen Alber, Taylor Crystal, Cameron Ellison, Zach Vu, Gavyn Byxbe, Urijah Bates, Deegan Pike and Wyatt Cooper.

The 3rd place finishers were Logan Galinis, Jaxon Fitzgerald, Tucker Crystal, Dakota Winchell, Brenden Johnson and Rory Shoenborn.

The 2nd place grapplers were Jonathan Libera, Jayce Karafa, Hudson Crystal, Blake Falan, Thomas Prins and Conner Dines.

This Sunday’s CSYWC Champions were Ben Streeter, Tucker Dines, Nolan Myers, Carter Falan, Logan Troupe and Maston Wood. Congratulations, wrestlers!

Deegan Pike had the most pins for the team and was 25th over all with 3 pins in 4:30. Conner Dines was 32nd with 3 in 5:41. Cameron Ellison was 57th with 2 in 1:44. Carter Falan was 100th with 2 in 3:54. Maston Wood was 18th in fastest Technical Fall (wrestling’s version of the mercy rule) winning 17-2 in 2:41. Hudson Crystal tied for 41st winning 16-0 in 4:30. Conner Dines had the fastest pin for the team and tied for 15th with :18, Alex Hanes tied for 60th with :32, Ben Streeter tied for 68th with :35 and Cameron Ellison tied for 98th with :44. Carter Falan and Logan Troupe tied at 21st over all with the most team points for the day with 22.0, Tucker Dines tied for 40th with 20.0, Deegan Pike and Blake Falan tied for 64th with 18.0 and Conner Dines tied for 80th with 17.0. Conner Dines and Alex Hanes tied for 13th with 18 single match points. Maston Wood tied for 22nd with 17, Hudson Crystal tied for 39th with 16, Gavyn Byxbe and Taylor Crystal tied for 82nd with 14. Rory Shoenborn tied for 15th in total match points with 38, Conner Dines tied for 20th with 37, Tucker Dines tied for 24th with 35, Deegan Pike tied for 49th with 30, Henry Galinis tied for 57th with 29, Brycen Alber, Alex Hanes and Maston Wood tied for 64th with 28, Hudson Crystal tied for 73rd with 27, Taylor Crystal, Cameron Ellison and Zach Vu tied for 90th with 25.

CS Youth wrestlers at Border Wars

Three CSYWC grapplers joined 334 others to try to win a plate sized Monster Medal at the first Border Wars tournament of the season in Brighton, Mich. on Saturday, March 25. Coached by their dads, the boys experienced some great competition from all over the state.

In the 2008-2009 49lb class, Tucker Crystal placed 3rd after 3 matches, scoring 6 match points. In the combined 67/72lb class, Jonathon Libera placed 4th after 3 matches, scoring 6 match points.

In the 2006-2007 80lb class Hudson Crystal wrestled 3 matches, going 1-2 for the day and scoring 7 match points.

CS Youth wrestlers were some of 356 first and second year wrestlers that competed for top spots at the Novice Championships in Saline, Mich. This is the third year the club has travelled to this tournament and it is a fantastic way for the novice wrestler to end their year. The eight local wrestlers finished the day 21-10.

“I’m really proud of these kids. They are out here every week learning new moves and driving themselves just as hard as the more experienced wrestlers. They are using that knowledge from those tough losses and pushing themselves to win matches. I can’t wait to get them back on the mat next year!” said Coach Jake Marsman.

The team placed 10th out of 76 in Most Pins/Least Time with 10 pins in 14:22. Chasyn Winchel was 41st over all with 2 in :44. Dakota Winchel placed 43rd over all with 2 in :57. Deegan Pike was 64th over all with 2 in 2:55. Cade Troupe placed 93rd over all with 1 in :42. CSYWC was 17th in over all match points with 106. Wyatt Dickinson came in 2nd over all in Single Match Points with 19. Cole Haack was 44th over all with 13.

In the 2010-2012 55lb class Chasyn Winchel placed 1st after 4 matches.

In the 2008-2009 58lb class Deegan Pike placed 3rd after 7 matches.

In the 2006-2007 110lb class Dakota Winchel placed 3rd after 4 matches.

In the 2004-2005 100lb class Cole Haack placed 1st after 2 matches. In the 105lb class, Gabe Gair placed 1st after 3 matches, 54th over all in Most Pins/Least Time with 2 in 5:45.

On Sunday, February 19, 21 wrestlers from the Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling Club competed at Sparta High School in the fourth annual Meijer State Games of Michigan-Winter Games. There were 91 teams and 623 wrestlers gathered to compete in a tournament that focuses on sportsmanship, participation, and healthy living. They finished the day 44-31, with 23 pins and 197 match points. They placed 2nd overall in pins, 12th in match points.

Coach Jake Marsman remarked on how proud he is of all of his wrestlers. “They’ve come a long way this year. We have a lot of beginning wrestlers who are out here every week competing against kids who have been wrestling for years. They are holding their own and even coming home with medals. They are helping rebuild this program from the bottom up with strong family involvement and great pride in their accomplishments. These kids are working hard for a sport they love,” he said.

In the 2010-2012 All division, 49lb-B class Tucker Crystal placed 1st after 3 matches. He had 3 pins in a total time of 1:56. In the 58lb class Chasyn Winchel placed 1st after 3 matches. He had 2 pins in 2:37, scoring 22 match points for the day.

In the 2008-2009 Open division, 64lb class Blake Falan placed 2nd after 4 matches. He had 2 pins in 3:11, scoring 12 match points for the day. In the 72lb class Jonathan Libera placed 4th after 4 matches. He had 1 pin in 2:46.

In the 2006-2007 Novice division, 75lb class Remington DeWeese placed 4th after 4 matches. He had 1 pin in 2:02. In the 110lb class Dakota Winchel placed 1st after 2 matches. He had 2 pins in 2:42. In the 130lb class David DeWeese placed 3rd after 3 matches. He had 1 pin in :43. In the Open Division, 80lb class Hudson Crystal placed 2nd after 6 matches. He had 2 pins in 3:34, scoring 29 match points for the day. In the 150lb class Wyatt Cooper placed 3rd after 2 matches.

In the 2004-2005 Novice Division, 75/80lb combined class Ricco Artecki placed 1st after 4 matches. He had 2 pins in 1:49, scoring 19 match points for the day. In the 100/105lb combined class Ben Brunner placed 1st after 3 matches. He had 3 pins in a total time of 2:22. In the Open Division, 105lb class Carter Falan placed 1st after 3 matches. He had 2 pins in 1:49, scoring 11 match points for the day. Logan Troupe placed 3rd after 3 matches, scoring 13 match points for the day.

Despite the weather last Sunday, January 10, the Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling Club sent 21 wrestlers to tournaments in Grand Haven and Big Rapids.

“The kids are really starting to put their moves into action and it’s showing in their matches. Out of 21 wrestlers, 15 medaled. We have some great young wrestlers!” said Coach Jake Marsman.

Ending the day 4th in their weight classes were Tucker Crystal in 46lb 09-11 All, Zack Haack in the 61lb 07-08 Novice & Gavyn Byxbe in the 67lb 07-08 Open brackets.

Finishing in 3rd Place was Logan Troupe in the 85lb 03-04 Novice bracket.

2nd Place grapplers were Treyce Niles in the 49lb 09-11 All, Reed Haack in the 61lb 09-11 All, Trevor Marsman in the 75lb 03-04 Open and Austin Miller in the 183lb 03-04 Novice brackets.

1st Place Champions were Blake Falan in the 55lb 07-08 Novice, Keaton Klaasen in the 59lb 05-06 Open, Hudson Crystal in the 72lb 07-08 Open, Blake Pickard in the 80lb 05-06 Novice, Andrew VanGessel in the 85lb 01-02 All, Carter Falan in the 90lb 03-04 Open and Ariana Meyers in the 133lb 03-04 Open brackets.

This past Sunday the Cedar Springs Youth Wrestlers hit the mats for the 2015-16 season opener at the Mona Shores Open & Novice Tournament.

“They faced some challenging opponents, some facing off on the mat for the first time in competition. They are learning that facing your fears on the mat teaches you to depend on yourself, that your own strength (and weakness) fuels the outcome of your match. No amount of practice can give them that fire to win and to do their personal best,” said Coach Jake Marsman. “Out of 18 wrestlers, 15 took home medals! Way to go, boys and girls!” he added.

First place finishers were Gavin Byxbe in the 7/8 year old 67lb open division, Trevor Marsman in the 11/12 year old 75lb open division, Logan Troupe in the 11/12 year old 85lb novice division, Andrew VanGessel in the 13/14 year old 85lb open division and Carter Falan in the 11/12 year old 90lb open division.

Second place finishers were Keaton Klaasen in the 9/10 year old 59lb open division, Marek Russ in the 7/8 year old 64lb novice division, Matthew Vaughn in the 9/10 year old 90lb novice division, Ariana Meyers in the 11/12 year old 133lb novice division and Austin Miller in the 11/12 year old 183lb novice division.

Third place finishers were Bryson Streeter in the 4/5/6 year old 40lb novice division, Blake Pickard in the 9/10 year old 80lb novice division and Wyatt Cooper in the 9/10 year old 110lb open division.

Fourth place finishers were Treyce Niles in the 4/5/6 year old 52lb and Blake Falan in the 7/8 year old novice divisions.
