Man sentenced on child exploitation charges

The Cedar Springs business owner who was arrested last fall on child exploitation charges has pleaded to the charges and is now serving his sentence.

Richard Webb, 45, of Nelson Township, was arrested in September 2016, after the Michigan State Police (MSP) Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force conducted a search warrant at his home, and found him to be in possession of and distributing child sexually abusive material.

Webb was charged with one count of distributing child sexually abusive material, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. He pled guilty to those charges, and was sentenced to one year in jail, five years probation, and 200 hours of community service. He also has to pay $1,326 in court-related costs: $136 to the state, $130 crime victim, $60 DNA, $600 attorney fees, and $400 in court costs. He is serving his time in the Kent County jail.

Webb is the owner/operator of Zylatech, an IT business based in Cedar Springs. The business provided service to the greater Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas.

According to D/Sgt. Chris Prevette, clients of Zylatech shouldn’t have anything to worry about regarding their own computers. “We don’t have anything showing that he co-mingled his personal files with business files,” he said.

Investigation involves the exploitation of minor children 

The Michigan State Police (MSP) Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of 55-year-old Craig Alan Albright, of Greenville.

Albright was investigated after the MSP ICAC received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). On Dec. 8, 2016, a search warrant was executed at Albright’s home. Evidence was recovered that connected Albright with child sexually abusive activity and material at his home.

An arrest warrant was obtained and Albright turned himself into the Montcalm County Jail on Jan. 9, 2017.

Albright has been arraigned on the charges issued by the Montcalm County Prosecutor’s Office. They include Child Sexually Abusive Activity, Child Sexually Abusive Material (Possession) and Using a Computer to Commit a Crime.

A 22-year-old Sparta man is in jail after police arrested him on multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct and child sexually abusive material.

According to the Michigan State Police, their Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) involving child exploitation.

ICAC then conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of a Tyler Ryan Lowis, 22, of Sparta. On November 14, 2016, a search warrant was executed at Lowis’ residence. Evidence was recovered that connected Lowis to child sexually abusive material and criminal sexual conduct.

Lowis was lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility on November 14 and arraigned on November 15, 2016. The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office issued the charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct, First Degree (3 Counts), Child Sexually Abusive Material, Manufacturing (3 Counts), and Using a Computer to Commit a Crime (3 Counts).

A Cedar Springs business owner is in hot water after police allegedly found child sexually abusive material on his home computer.

According to D/Sgt. Chris Prevette, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of a Richard Webb, 44, of Nelson Township.

A search warrant was conducted at Webb’s residence, where he was found to be in possession of, and distributing, child sexually abusive material. He turned himself in on Thursday, Sept. 8, for video arraignment in 61st District Court in Grand Rapids.

Webb was charged with one count of distributing child sexually abusive material, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. Bond was set at $25,000. He was released on his own personal recognizance.

Webb is the owner/operator of Zylatech, an IT business based in Cedar Springs. The business provides service to the greater Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas.

According to D/Sgt. Prevette, clients of Zylatech shouldn’t have anything to worry about regarding their own computers. “We don’t have anything showing that he co-mingled his personal files with business files,” expained Prevette.

Prevette said that MSP initiated the investigation into Webb’s files, but couldn’t yet divulge what led them to suspect him.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for September 20 at 9 a.m., and a preliminary exam is scheduled for September 27 at 1:30 p.m., both in 61st District Court.
