Sand Lake celebrates Fourth of July

It was a grand party in Sand Lake last week, for the town’s 144th annual Fourth of July Celebration. The celebration ran from Wednesday, July 3, through Sunday July 7. A Parade of Lights, honoring area firefighters and law enforcement officials kicked off the festivities Tuesday evening, July 2. People traveled from all over to attend the annual event, which included a midway with carnival rides and games, food, parades, music, fireworks and much more during the 5-day event.

Museum to show off new addition

After years of planning, building and arranging, The Cedar Springs Historical Museum at Morley Park in Cedar Springs is ready to dedicate its new addition.
The celebration will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 17. Admission is free.
For the first time ever, the museum will have a large amount of their collection on display. One display, the Native American exhibit, is in transition and won’t yet be complete, but visitors will be able to observe it as it’s being completed. It is a hands-on project that kids will be able to sit in and listen to a Native American presentation discussing early American life. Display cases have been built that children will easily be able to see at their level. They plan to have arrowheads and Native American artifacts on display in the cases.
For those interested in genealogy, they have an extensive collection of reference materials, including a complete collection of obituaries of Cedar Springs.
Lunch will be provided outdoors by the Boy Scouts for $6.00, which includes a pork sandwich, coleslaw, baked beans and a drink.
The Cedar Springs Historical Society was formed in 1967. In 1971, the one-room Payne school was donated to the society by Marjorie and Cordy Wallace, and moved to Morley Park. In 1991 they were given permission to build a new museum, and held their first meeting in the new museum in 1997. In 2004, they began fundraising for the new addition.
