Cedar Springs Varsity wrestlers

The Cedar Springs Varsity wrestlers traveled to Forest Hills Central on Friday night, January 12, to face off against the Rangers and Huskies. After falling behind 17-3 early on, the Red Hawks then reeled off victories in 8 of the next 9 weights to claim a 43-23 win. The boys ran on the Huskies early and never looked back, topping the Huskies 63-9. Undefeated wrestlers on the night were Trevor Marsman, Nate Male, Logan Hull, Aaron Smith, Anthony Brew, Jacob Galinis, Lucus Pienton, Ryan Ringler and Zak Schmid.

On Saturday, January 13, the Red Hawks traveled across state to Warren for the Clash of the Champions. The team finished runner-up in a strong field of 19 competitive schools.

Ryan Ringler won the 171lb weight class and was awarded Most Valuable Wrestler. Ringler defeated the number two and four ranked wrestlers in his division, according to MIGrappler.com.

Runner-up finalists for the Red Hawks included Trevor Marsman (103), Lucus Pienton (152), and Chris Shaffer (189).

Important contributions and medalists on the day for Cedar Springs came from Aaron Smith (3rd), Jacob Galinis (5th), Caleb Baty (5th), Paul Duran, Anthony Brew, Logan Hull, Nate Male, Trentyn Roelofs, David Erxleben and Zak Schmid.

Don’t miss the home action on Friday night versus arch rival Greenville and Ottawa Hills at 5 p.m. The team will travel to Stevensville Lakeshore for duals on Saturday.

Team defends championship dual title

The Cedar Springs Varsity wrestling team had a great week last week with wins at the Mona Shores quad and the Shelby Super Duals, and two Red Hawks each getting their 150th career win.

The team traveled to Mona Shores on Wednesday, January 25, for a quad meet. The Red Hawks had a successful night and claimed victories against both Grand Rapids Catholic Central, 65-9 and Grand Rapids Union, 78-6. 189 lb Ryan Ringler, Heavy Weight Patrick Depiazza, 112 lb Nathan Male, 119 lb Logan Hull, 125/130 lb Aaron Smith, 125/130 lb Patrick Fliearman, 135 lb Jordan Andrus, 140 lb Jordan Ringler, 145 lb Jacob Galinis, 152 lb Lucus Pienton and 160 Zak Schmid all won both of their matches. 171 lb Xavier Anderson, 171 lb Nate Patin and 215 Chris Shaffer each won a match. Junior Varsity 125 lb Kaedrian Dines and 135 lb Anthony Brew each won both of their matches. 160 lb Corey Dymerski and 189 lb Caleb Baty each won a match.

On Saturday, January, 28, the Red Hawks traveled to Shelby for their Super Duals Meet with 12 area schools entered to compete. It was a successful day for the team. The day started off with a win against Ravenna, 56-6. The winning streak continued against Muskegon Catholic, 71-6. Fremont called out the Red Hawks during the Coaches seeding meeting. They felt they could match up pretty evenly with our team and the boys accepted the challenge and delivered a win, 50-21. Semi Finals brought us up against Shelby and concluded with another win, 56-12. Cedar Springs and Hart met against each other for the Championship Dual and the Red Hawks defended their Championship title for the second year in a row, final score, 45-21. Hart finished in 2nd Place and Shelby finished in 3rd Place. Individual placements are as follows: 125 lb Aaron Smith, 145/152 lb Lucus Pienton, 171/189 lb Ryan Ringler, 171/189 lb Nate Patin and Heavy Weight Patrick Depiazza all went undefeated with records of 5-0 for the day. 112 lb Nathan Male, 119 lb Logan Hull, 130 lb Jordan Andrus and 135 lb Jordan Ringler all claimed 4 wins each. 140/145 lb Jacob Galinis claimed 3 wins. 215 lb Chris Shaffer claimed 2 wins. 140 lb Anthony Brew and 160 lb Xavier Anderson claimed a win. There were also exhibition matches to gain more mat time. Patrick Fliearman claimed 2 wins, Anthony Brew and David Erxleben also claimed a win. During the Championship dual, two CS seniors, Patrick Depiazza and Jordan Ringler claimed their 150 Varsity Career win. This is a major accomplishment for any wrestler; it shows the level of skill and dedication to the sport. Patrick and Jordan are ranked in the top five of Cedar Springs Wrestling history. Senior Patrick Depiazza is currently ranked #4 and Sophomore Ryan Ringler are currently ranked #5 in the Power 15 State Ranking. The Power 15 is the best of the best of all the divisions listed in the State of Michigan. Ryan is the only Sophomore listed in this category full of Seniors. Congratulations to these hard working student athletes.
