Adverse weather

Occasionally, adverse weather conditions or other emergency situations may make it necessary to cancel school, delay the start of school, cancel evening activities or run buses on main/paved roads only. When these situations occur, notice will be communicated to WOOD TV 8, WXMI Fox 17, and WZZM TV 13 through the Grand Rapids Area Information Line (GRAIL) to all subscribing area media.

Campus Kids will be open on days that school is closed and/or delayed unless otherwise noted in school closing announcements.

Buses will not transport students to Kent Career and Technical Center for 1st session when a school delay or cancellation is issued. Students will be given a weather-related absence at KCTC when we are officially not transporting them. Students who choose to drive personal vehicles to KCTC on school delays or cancellations assume responsibility for their decision.

When school evening activities are cancelled, this cancellation also includes all clubs, organizations and extra-curricular events held on campus and scheduled for that evening.   For more information, please visit www.csredhawks.org or call 616-696-1204.

Campus Kids continues to grow!!

Campus Kids has really grown in size over the past 2 years!  Since the start of the school year, we have served 212 students!  Our Pre-schoolers through 1st grade students attend our Cedar Trails location, while our 2nd through 5th graders attend at Beach location.  This number includes students who come in the mornings, afternoons, and all day care when school is closed.  The staff has done a great job of getting to know each child and of offering programming that they enjoy.  In the mornings, the children can work on a craft, go to the gym, watch a movie, or play a game with a friend.  The afternoon session offers time to play outside or in the gym, homework time, computer time, or crafts.  Parents really like it when their child finishes his/her homework or reading while at Campus Kids.

Our all day programming occurs on days when school is closed; i.e., Mid-Winter Break, Spring Break, Christmas Break, etc.  On these days, the children spend a lot of time outside enjoying the Michigan climate (weather permitting!) by sledding, building snowmen or forts, playing on the outdoor equipment, cooking snacks, playing gym games, competing in games for prizes, crafting, and reading or playing on the computers.  There is a small time frame in the morning and in the afternoon for electronic use.  The staff really keeps the children busy and engaged with their peers throughout the day.  We are currently gearing up for our Summer Camp session.  Campus Kids Summer Camp will be held at Cedar Trails.  The children are divided by age group – 3 to 7 year olds and 8 to 12 year olds.  This way we can plan age appropriate activities and outings.   Summer Camp starts on June 12, 2017 and runs through August 31, 2017.  We are closed the week of the 4th of July.  There is a $20 registration fee for one child and a $35 registration fee for a family.  If you register for the Summer Camp, your registration fee covers the next school year.  Cost for Summer Camp is $27 a day or $125 for 5 days a week.  Families can sign up for as many or as few days as needed.  A sibling discount is available.  Tuition payments are due a month in advance and payment is expected for the number of days registered for.  No refunds are issued for missed days.  Field trip costs are extra.  Drop-In rates are available but your child needs to be registered and please call in advance to check availability.  Programming for Summer Camp includes many field trips to various fun and educational spots around the area.  Last summer we offered 34 field trips and plan to offer even more this year!!  Some examples of field trips last summer included:  bowling, roller skating, Paris Park Fish Hatchery, berry picking, Rockfit Ninja gym, zoo, swimming, Whitecaps Baseball game, parks, movies, Howard Christensen Nature Center, NorthStar gymnastics, splashpad, Boulder Creek Wild Animal Park, etc.  Other fun activities included contests, crafts, gardening, community service, Zumba, reading and relaxing, free time, outdoor play, etc. We also employ some teachers for the summer, so tutoring assistance is available for those desiring it.    Registration packets are available at Cedar Trails or online at csredhawks.org and Campus Kids is under the Parents tab.  Or you can call Campus Kids at (616)696-1716 or e-mail questions to campus.kids@csredhawks.org.  Please register for Summer Camp by May 10, 2017.

Campus Kids are having a BLAST This Summer!!

CSPS-CampusKids-indoors

Teresea Schlump, Campus Kids Director

The students attending the Campus Kids Summer program are having so much fun!  We have been very active not only on campus, but by going on lots of enjoyable field trips!!  One of the goals of Campus Kids is to offer our students many new opportunities to experience different activities.  We are always searching for new places to take the students to expose them to new educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities.  To meet this goal, we have traveled to lots of places not only in Cedar Springs, but in our surrounding communities.  For example, some of our students have had a golf lesson at Cedar Chase, experienced a ninja obstacle course at Rockfit Ninja Gym, fed the fish at the Paris Park Fish Hatchery, picked berries at Krupp’s Farm, watched a baseball game at the Whitecaps, and shot bows and arrows at WM Archery Center in Rockford.  In all, we will go on 36 field trips this summer!!   Sometimes we take everyone, and other times we take a smaller group of students.  One of the other goals of the Campus Kids program is to spend a large portion of the day CSPS-CampusKids-waterfunoutside.  This summer, we have spent approximately 60% of the day outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  Some of the activities we have done when we are on campus have ranged from crafting to STEM activities to challenge our minds, walking/running club, building and playing on a giant slip and slide, growing vegetables in the Community Garden, journaling, playing charades, and preparing and eating healthy snacks.  We have also done some community service work by picking up trash on campus.

Campus Kids Enjoy Autumn!!

Campus Kids enjoy learning Yoga.

Campus Kids enjoy learning Yoga.

This fall, the students enrolled in the Campus Kids program have been enjoying the nice weather and doing lots of fun activities.  Campus Kids is the Before and After school program located in Cedar Trails Elementary School.

Campus Kids enjoying Zumba.

We have expanded our morning programming to include Arts and Crafts, gym time, group games, and Just Dance videos.  The children are enjoying the morning structure, and look forward to what each morning will bring!

Campus Kids has enjoyed learning how to do Yoga in the afternoons.  Michelle, from Moxie Fitness, has been coming on Thursdays to teach a Beginner Class.  All of the students were given the opportunity to try the exercise, and a number of them signed up to continue on in a more advanced class.   The students are learning poses to help with flexibility, strength, concentration, posture, and breathing.  It is our goal to continue to expose our students to a large variety of new activities.  Zumba is a favorite activity for many of our students, and that is offered once a month on Early Release Fridays.

Campus Kids enjoy learning how to serve, set, and spike the ball from the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team.

We have also received a visit from the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team this fall!  The team came over and showed everyone how to serve, set, and spike the ball.  It was a very fun filled afternoon for everyone.

Campus Kids is looking forward to winter and doing many winter activities and craft projects, while also learning about various customs around the world.

For additional information about Campus Kids, please call us at 616 696-1716.

“Campus Kids Explore”

Campus Kids, the Before and After School Program, explored their senses on a recent snow day with many fun, ooey, gooey activities!!!  Sensory tubs were set up so we could have a lot of messy fun!!  We made tie-dye pictures with shaving cream and liquid watercolor paints and then played in the shaving cream, made ooblick out of cornstarch and water, and had a great time in the clean mud made out of Ivory Soap!!  The fantastic afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.  We can’t wait to do it again!

We are also doing “Random Acts of Kindness” throughout the month!  We have had discussions about helping others and about being nice at home and at school.  When a child does an “act of kindness”, they write it on a plastic flower and add it to our “Garden of Kindness” on the wall.  Our Garden grows everyday with many kind acts!

One of the many after school activities is called “Everyone Reads”.  In this program, an older child from Beach or Cedar View is paired up with a child from Cedar Trails, and they read books together.  The older children encourage the younger children to read out loud, and they help them with the words.  It has been great to see the interactions!

Summer is (hopefully!) right around the corner, and Campus Kids will be hosting a Summer Camp for all who are interested.  We will be doing lots of fun, creative, and educational activities every day of the week.  These may include gardening, sports, music, arts and crafts, tutoring assistance in various subjects, sensory fun, computer use, experiments, a walking/running club, etc.  We also are looking forward to several field trips throughout the summer.

The cost of Summer Camp is $27 a day or $125 a week (for 5 days).  There is a $10 a day discount for the second child if attending 4 to 5 days a week.  Campus Kids Summer Camp will be closed June 30 through July 4.  If you are interested in signing your child up for Summer Camp, please call Teresea Schlump, Child Care Director at (616) 696-1716 for more information.

Ten players from the Cedar Springs High School Lady Red Hawks Volleyball team visited the Campus Kids Before and After School Care program on October 25. They worked with the students on hitting, setting, and serving. They also had a contest for serving accuracy.

Campus Kids Director Teresea Schlump was especially pleased with how the visit went. “The Before and After School program is promoting new experiences for the children, and this is just one great example,” she said.
