LEON E. AVERY


Leon E. Avery age 86 of Cedar Springs died Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at his home. Leon was born July 5, 1934 in Cedar Springs, MI, the son of Donald and Caroline (Townes) Avery. He served in the US Army. He was Worshipful Master of Cedar Springs Lodge 213 (4 times), a Member of OES Job’s Daughters Bethel 86 Dad. He retired from the Kent County Road Commission after 41 years. After his retirement he worked at Great Day. Leon served on the Cedar Springs City Council for 20 years and the Cedar Springs Fire Department for 25 years. He is most recognized as Mr. Red Flannel driving the Keystone Kop truck for years and was a Keystone Kop for 54 years or more. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Deb (Harold) Yancey, Nancy (Edward) Johnson; grandchildren, Amber (Eric) Anderson, Mandy (Josh) Tomlinson, Michael Leon (Brandy) Yancey, Mallory Johnson (Christopher Kieda), Mark (Julie) Johnson, and Harold (Jeannie O’Malley) Yancey Jr; great-grandchildren, Brooke (Taylor Krulek) Mason, Chloe Mason, Rebecca Mason, Mia Hurtado, Isabelle Yancey, Michael Leon Yancey Jr., Chase Johnson; great-great-grandson, River Leon Krulek; sister-in-law, Peggy Avery; nephews, Michael (Denise) Avery, Tim (Kim) Avery, Philip (Janet) Stanton; nieces, Ida Clement, Donna Kay Stanton; special niece, Dawnette (Steve) Roberts; special friends, Mark Strypko, Rick and Judy Fisher. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl (Joseph), Jerry, David Avery; sister, Madeline Piasecki; sisters-in-law, Verna Stanton, Jean (Violet) Avery; brothers-in-law, Donald Stanton, Stan Piasecki; special uncle, Edward Townes. The family greeted friends Sunday, July 19 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. A private family service was held Monday, July 20. Pastors Larry French and Darryl Miller officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.

MICHAEL R. GILLETTE


Michael R. Gillette age 60 of Cedar Springs passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 9, 2020. Mike was born September 9, 1959 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Roger and Arlene (Morris) Gillette. Mike attended Cedar Springs High School where he enjoyed wrestling and playing football. He was involved in the FFA and was proud to serve as president his senior year. Mike was humble, thoughtful and a gentle soul. He was a quiet man, but if you got him talking about something he enjoyed, he loved to share that knowledge with others. Mike enjoyed playing his guitar, music, and cooking from his Grandma Jessie’s cookbook. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time at John Deere Camp. Mike liked antiques, history, gardening, and classic cars. He loved morning coffee with his wife and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lisa; daughters, Jessie (Nic) Pemberton and Erin (Matt) Smith; grandchildren, Gianna, Bennett and Kenzie; brothers, Roger “Rip” (Kenda) Gillette, and Jeff Gillette; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Springs Future Farmers of America, 204 E. Muskegon Cedar Springs, MI 49319.

THELMA MAE GOULD


Thelma Mae Gould age 91 of Cedar Springs died June 29, 2020 at Trillium Woods in Byron Center, MI. Thelma was born February 12, 1929 in Belmont, MI the daughter of Murel and Marjorie (Wilkinson) Ball. She is survived by her children, Beth A. Gould Phelps, Bruce E. (Deborah) Gould, Douglas A. Gould; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; grandson, Derek Gould; brothers, Howard and Chuck Ball; sisters, Glenna LaValley, Adeline Rusche. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions to Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church or Faith Hospice.

LOREN W. FREY


Loren W. Frey age 102 of Ensley Township, Sand Lake, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at his beloved family farm with his family by his side. Loren was born August 31, 1917 in Ensley Township, MI the son of Harold and Dora (Borton) Frey. He attended Frey Country School and graduated from Sand Lake High School. He was a member of South Ensley United Methodist Church where he had been church superintendent. He was a member of the 4-H, Sons of the American Revolution and the Ensley School Board. He was a farmer all of his life and had been a die maker at General Motors for 30 years retiring in 1980. He had cared for his grandparents and wife and was a loving husband and father. Surviving are his children, Norman Frey and Hilda, Jack and Holly Frey, Janet and Gary Rogers, Joy and John Alex, Kay Deacey, Karna and Joe Montambo, Paul and Val Frey; son-law, Richard Morris; 33 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet and a daughter, Nancy Morris. A private visitation and family service was held at Crandall Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice or South Ensley United Methodist Church.

RENE MARIE BRAVATA


René Marie Bravata age 62 died Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Valley View Care Center, Grand Rapids, MI. René was born November 23, 1957 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Ernest Brancheau and Joycelyn (Allen) Brancheau. René was very independent. She loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and sweets. René also enjoyed doing volunteer work in the Rockford community. She is survived by her children, Heidi (Jeff) Carter, Jason Bravata, and Trisha (Jacob) Schmidt; grandchildren, Gavin and Jakson Bravata, Logan and Brenna Schmidt, Kimberly and Kyle Carter; brothers, Troy (Tammy) Brancheau, Chad (Jessica) Brancheau; sister, Jenna (Troy) Peters; former husband, Joseph J. Bravata, Jr.; several nieces and nephews and her fur companion, Callie. She was preceded in death by her parents. A graveside service will be held at Solon Township Cemetery 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Pastor Rob Schmidt officiating. JAMES P. SEE


James P. See age 80 of Rockford, died Saturday, May 16, 2020 at his home. Jim was born in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Isaac and Ione (Clifford) See. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-65. He was a member of the Cedar Springs American Legion where he ran the bingo for 22 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and retired from Steelcase. Surviving are his children, Debi (Garrett) Hanson, Patrick (Kathy) See, Gerald See, Dawn and Edward Smith, David Smith, Eric See; grandchildren, Nicole Miller, Jessica Krueger, Breanna Smith, Brayden Smith, Christa See, Kristen See, James See; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Bob, George, Ron, Jack, Tom and Betty. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nancy in 2018; grandchildren, Brendan Smith and Katie Grace Smith; siblings, Don, Roger and Shirley. A visitation will be held Thursday, May 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The family will not be present. A private family graveside will be held Friday at Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Rev. Fr. Lam Le officiating. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Springs American Legion.

RAMON L. HUNTER


Ramon L. Hunter age 93 of Cedar Springs, died Monday, March 30, 2020 at his home. Ramon was born April 27, 1926 in Cedar Springs, MI the son of Howard and Nancy (Walls) Hunter. He worked for Sparta Piston Ring for 30 years, was a farmer and worked with plow horses. He enjoyed fishing, had a sense of humor and was a tease. Surviving are his granddaughters, Beverly Huffman, Barbara Morris, Britt McCarthy and B.J. Lebeck; special friend, Katie Schumann. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gertrude in 2005; step-daughters, Helen (Fay) Lebeck, Mary Jean (Steve) Rowland; siblings, Leslie, Paul, Maurice, Jesse and Floran Hunter, Beulah McIntyre, Carrie Zeck. A private family service was held on Thursday, April 2 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. NORMA J. WERT


Norma J. Wert, age 94, of Cedar Springs died Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Metron of Greenville surrounded by her family. Mrs. Wert was born November 11, 1923 in Muskegon, Michigan, the daughter of Ezra and Ellen (Hoxsie) Geesey. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed housekeeping, holiday meals and gatherings and was known for the world’s best carrot cake. Surviving are her children, Frederick (Diane) Wert, Timothy (Jodie) Wert; daughters-in-law, Kathleen Wert, Frances Osburn; grandchildren, Cory Wert, Troy Wert, Donald Wert, Chris Ann Rehl; great-grandson, Devin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick in 1995; sons, Donald and Dennis Wert; 4 sisters and 2 brothers. The family greeted friends Monday, October 15 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where the service was held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. Pastor J.B. Stutts officiating. Interment Idlewild Cemetery, Kent City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cedar Springs American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

MICHAEL J. MASLOWSKI


Michael J. Maslowski, age 64, of Cedar Springs, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 at his home. Michael was born August 24, 1954 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Albert and Patricia (Anderson) Maslowski. He was a hardworking man, jack of all trades and provider for his family. He was very compassionate and kind and a godly and devoted Christian. Surviving are his wife, Barbara (White); children, Chad (Angie) Stoken, Sherri (Matt) Kemp, Brenda White, Mike (Kayleigh) Maslowski, Dwayne White, Mark White; 8 grandchildren; sisters, Victoria Shepard, Deb (Tom) Duffy. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family will greet friends Sunday, October 7 from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 4:00 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs.

LOUIS L. MILEWSKI


 

Louis L. Milewski, age 91, of Cedar Springs, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018 at his home. Louis was born December 29, 1926 Alpine Township, Michigan the son of Leon and Catherine (Voychinski) Milewski. He enjoyed archery and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years Marlene; daughter, Cindy Westveld; grandchildren, Christopher (Tracy) Klukowski and Aaron (Courtney) Westveld; 5 great-grandchildren, Molly, Erin, Corbin, Koral and Cameron; sister-in-law, Sandra (Michael) Mosier and brother-in-law, Gary Novakoski. He was preceded in death by his son, Randall Milewski; brothers, Edward and John Milewski; sister, Dorothy Berkey and special nephew, Joe Bolthuis. Per his request cremation has taken place. The family will hold a celebration of his life at a later date.
