c-obit-eldred-2Margaret G. Eldred 98 of Cedar Springs, passed safely into Jesus’ arms Monday, December 26, 2016 at Metro Health Hospital. Mrs. Eldred was born March 19, 1918 in Cedar Springs, Michigan the daughter of Howard and Muriel (Ferguson) French. During her life she had enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, ice fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting and agate picking. She was a lifelong member of the Free Methodist Church and was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. Surviving are her daughters, Tanya Eldred and Terri Matz; grandchildren and the light of her life, Riley Keith and Lucina Margaret; brother, Merlyn (SangKi) French; sister-in-law, Wilma Eldred; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Patricia Patin and Leah Sims Battle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith in 1997 and a brother, Kenneth French. A private family service will take place at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Cash officiating. A memorial service will be announced in the summer. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Indian School or Cedar Christian Academy.

CAROL LEE KIDDER

Carol Lee Kidder, 78 of Cedar Springs, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Kidder was born January 13, 1938 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of Roy and Carol (Lankton) Dudley. She graduated from nursing school in 1958 as a Registered Nurse and worked at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She was an avid Michigan State Fan and enjoyed golfing, traveling and trips with friends. Surviving are her children, Sharon (Todd) Freeland, Steven (Lisa) Kidder, Wilma Brown, Clare (Constance) Kidder, Carol (James) McInnis; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard and a sister, Judy Rosenberger. The family will greet friends Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Cedar Springs. Pastor Steve Lindeman officiating. Private interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. KEVIN C. QUIST

Kevin C. Quist 56 of Cedar Springs, died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Campus. Kevin was born April 5, 1960 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Chester and Dorothy (Fryling) Quist. He had worked for Amway Corp. since 1994 as a fabricator and welder. He enjoyed being an artist welder as a hobby. Surviving are his wife, Kimberly, whom he married on August 7, 1982; children, Jason Kohn, Korey Kohn and her fiancé, Philip Borrelli, Kevin M. Quist; parents, Chet and Dorothy Quist; sister, Jackie Mourer; cousins, nieces and nephews. Kevin had many special friends at Amway who have been very good to him during his illness. He recently connected with some friends from high school, and Dave Nester who helped him meet Kim years ago. The family will greet friends and celebrate his life on Saturday, December 10th from 11 – 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Bible Church, 361 Pine St., Cedar Springs with a short memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Wayne Cash officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Jerry Lynn Avery


c-obit-averyJerry Lynn Avery, 77 of Cedar Springs went into the loving arms of his Savior on Thursday, November 17, 2016 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born March 19, 1939 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Donald and Caroline (Townes) Avery. Jerry had a thirty four year career as a police officer, serving in the Kent County Sheriff’s Department and before that, the Cedar Springs Police Department.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, flying, bicycling and time with his grandkids. He was a member of Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church and the Northwest Soaring Club of Frankfort where he served as an instructor.  He was also a member of the Bad Bikers Bicycle Club, where he was known as the “Baddest Biker”. Surviving are his wife, Peggy (Beals) whom he married on November 12, 1957; sons, Mike (Denise) Avery, Tim (Kim) Avery; grandchildren, Sarah (Jordan) Brygal, James (Jessica) Edwards, Andy Avery, Jessica Martin, Jamie Jeffries III, Samantha Avery, Shelby Avery; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Leon (Janet) Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joe (Jean) Avery, David Avery; sister, Madeline (Stan) Piasecki. The family will greet friends Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service will be held Monday, Nov. 21 at Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church. Pastors Bill Johnson and Chuck Smith officiating. Interment Courtland Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Faith Hospice.

MYRON L. WALLER

Myron L. Waller 60 of Cedar Springs died Friday, November 11, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Myron was born March 29, 1956 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Donald and Opal (Middleton) Waller. Myron enjoyed all sports, especially baseball. After he became a parapalegic he enjoyed going out to the deck for some sun and giving his grandchildren and other children a ride on his wheelchair. Surviving are his daughter, Brittnie (Robert) Good; grandchildren, Brooklyn, Blake and Michael; mother, Opal Waller; brother, Mark (Julie) Barnhart; sisters, Judy Turner, Gail (Carl) Dunn, Janet (Lloyd) Ingersoll, LuAnn (Jeff) Piatt, Margie (Schmitty) Schmitz, Robin (Steve) Brott; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Kellie Fast. The family would like to thank all of the nurse aides who cared for Myron and became friends. A memorial service will be held at the Cedar Springs American Legion on Friday, November 18 at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Sandra J. Raymond


c-obit-raymond002Sandra J. Raymond, 73 of Cedar Springs, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus. Sandra was born July 13, 1943 in Grand Rapids, MI. She loved working in her flower gardens and cooking big meals. She was faithful in reading her Bible, praying for others and sending birthday and get well cards. Surviving are her husband, Darcey Raymond, Sr.; sons, Bruce (Colette) Benton, Lanny Benton, John (Monica) Benton; stepdaughter, Darla (Ricki) Myers, Shannon (Billy) Beck; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers, Donald (Pam) Sharpe, Tommy (Shirley) Sharpe; mother-in-law, Wanda Raymond; cousin, Ida Prill; close friend, Joyce Tompkins. She was preceded in death by mother, Neva Sharpe; father-in-law, Farrand Raymond; stepson, Darcey Raymond, Jr. The family will greet friends Saturday, November 19 from 10:00 am until time of memorial service at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church, 140 S. William R. Woudwyk, 62 of Cedar Springs was relieved of his suffering on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 12, 1954 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Tony and Alice (Gort) Woudwyk. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, game nights and most of all his family. Surviving are his wife, Kathy; children, Amy Lewis, Bill (Rachel) Woudwyk; grandchildren, Trey and Gavin Lewis, Aubrey, Aiden, Ethan, Nate, Gabe and Autumn Woudwyk; sister, Pat Zink and husband, Bill Vajda; brothers, Tom (Carolyn) Woudwyk, Steve (Char) Woudwyk; mother-in-law, Loretta Elliott; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Clifford Elliott. A special thanks to Spectrum Health Hospice for their care. The family will greet friends Saturday, November 12 at Courtland Township Hall, 7450 14 Mile Road, Rockford starting at 11:00 am. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon with a luncheon to follow. JEROME R. MILLER


 

Jerome R. Miller, 68 of Cedar Springs, died Friday, October 7, 2016 at Faith Hospice – Trillium Woods. Mr. Miller was born March 5, 1948 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Fred and Velma (McLaughlin) Miller. He retired from Kool Flow of Kent City. He enjoyed flying RC planes, boating, camping, traveling and jigsaw puzzles. He was a member of the Eagles in Sand Lake. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Nancy Ann; sons, Brett (Michelle) Miller, Ron (Heather) Miller, Travis (Heather) Miller; stepchildren, Deborah Wood, Ronnie Seabolt, April Seabolt; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family greeted friends Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where the service was held Monday 11:00 am. Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating. THOMAS D. HOVEY SR.


28C--obit-HoveyThomas D. Hovey Sr., age 86, of Sand Lake passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at his home. Tom was born June 22, 1930 in Grand Rapids. Surviving are his wife, Linda (Kort) Hovey; children, Mary and Tom Vaugh, Tom Hovey Jr., Kim and Karen Hovey, Pam and Al Pike, John Rasmussen, Lisa and Bill Groot; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sister, Marilyn Demerest; sisters-in-law, Jackie Kort, Judy Doxey and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Marcia Hovey; brother, Lee F. Hovey Jr.; his parents, Lee  and Petronella Hovey and in-laws, Pete and Phyllis Kort. Early on in life Tom’s interests revolved around racing. His first experience was at Bigelow Field in 1948 and a long career ensued in open wheeled racing. He was recognized as a fierce dirt track competitor at many Midwest tracks. He was an avid hunter with trips to Montana, Iowa, Canada and the Upper Peninsula. As a fisherman he loved the water. In the last ten years of his life he was happiest on their houseboat, “The Hardy Hilton” surrounded by friends and family telling funny stories which he did best. Tom worked many years as a truck driver and equipment operator, starting at Bishop Motor Freight with his dad and brother. Then he owned his own truck and worked for Reith Riley. He also owned Fun Spot Bowling Alley in Irons, Michigan and went to Central Alaska in 1980 where he gold mined and repaired heavy equipment. In 1992 Tom retired from Grand Valley Redi-Mix/Ottawa Aggregates. He then went back to work hauling dies for General Die until 1999. The family wishes to thank Spectrum Health Palliative and Hospice Care. A celebration of life will be held in the fall.

MINNIA A. HANES


Minnia A. Hanes, 59 of Cedar Springs passed away October 22, 2015 in Grand Rapids, MI. Minnia was born November 10, 1955 in Sparta, MI, the daughter of George and Bernice Loughin. Surviving are her children, Cheryl (David) Finnila, Joshua (Kerri) Hanes and Jeremy (Carrie) Hanes all of Cedar Springs; grandchildren, Stephanie Finnila, Ethan and Allison Hanes and Alexander and Katherine Hanes; significant other, Daniel Towns of Cedar Springs and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents and several siblings. The family received friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. No formal services will be held. Memorials to donor’s charity of choice.
