C--obit-ShirleyDella L. Shirley, 84 of Sand Lake, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Hospital. Mrs. Shirley was born January 27, 1933 in Green Township, Michigan the daughter of Nelson and Catherine (Palmer) Swiger. She had worked at General Motors Alpine Avenue Plant for over 30 years and was a member of the Rockford Sportsman’s Club and the UAW Retirees. She enjoyed many winters in Florida and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Edward whom she married on July 30, 1965; children, Rocky (Mary) Dorey, Linda (Bruce) Yeakey, Johnnie (Rita) Simon, Steven Simon; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Les Swiger; sister-in-law, Geraldine Swiger; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Shirley; sister, Leona Sperlik; brothers, Melvin, Gilbert and Albert Swiger; 3 nephews. The family greeted friends Sunday at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where the services were held Monday. Pastor Ralph Kilpatrick officiating. Interment Crapo Cemetery, Green Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

GERTRUDE J. GUST


 

C--obit-GustGertrude J. Gust, 99 of Cedar Springs, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Metron of Cedar Springs. Gertrude was born November 27, 1917 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Peter and Hattie (Huber) Koster. Her father died at a young age and her mother raised the children. She loved baseball and had played the violin. She enjoyed housekeeping and cleaning and for many years she volunteered to clean the Baptist Church each week. She was the oldest living member of First Baptist Church, Cedar Springs. Surviving are her son, James (Carol) Gust; grandson, Jason (Heather) Gust; two great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Koster; brother-in-law, Robert Remer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; sisters, Jane May, Madeline “Betty” Remer; brother, Robert Koster. Visitation and funeral was held Tuesday, March 21st at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Pastor Robert P. Smith officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs.

DOUGLAS M. GORDON


 

C--obit-gordonDouglas M. Gordon, 67 of Cedar Springs, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at his home. Doug was born December 28, 1949 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of E. Raymond and Janet (Gunnell) Gordon. He graduated from Cedar Springs High School in 1968 and Michigan Tech University with a bachelor degree in Forestry. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, morel hunting, golfing and playing cards. Surviving are his children, Mark Gordon, Sara (Will) Shepard, Matthew (Katie) Gordon, Molly Gordon; 10 grandchildren; sisters, Susie (Ken) Parker, Pam (Tim) Covell; brother, Joel Gordon; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Gordon. The family will greet friends Saturday from 11:00 am until time of service at 1:00 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Pastor Jane Duffy officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Springs Parks and Rec.

CAROL A. PHELPS


 

Carol A. Phelps age 80 of Cedar Springs, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at her home. Carol was born June 30, 1936 in Paw Paw Township, Michigan the daughter of Bernard and Maude (Sirrine) Schidt. She served as Nelson Township Clerk for many years. She loved the Lord and serving in church, most recently, North Kent Community Church. Surviving are her children, Debra Austin and Todd Phelps; grandchildren, Shawn (Katy) Austin, Troy (Kendra) Austin, Brandon Austin; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Phelps. Services were held Wednesday, February 8th at North Kent Community Church, 1480 Indian Lakes Road NE, Sparta. Pastor Craig Carter officiating. Interment in the spring in East Nelson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to pay it forward with an act of kindness.

LINDA MICHAELS


 

Linda Michaels, 72 of Rockford, unexpectedly went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in Casa Grande, Arizona. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church, Cedar Springs. A luncheon and time of sharing will follow at the church.

Linda Michaels


4C-Obit-michaelsLinda Michaels, 72 of Rockford, unexpectedly went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in Casa Grande, AZ.  She was a loved wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, expectant great-grandmother and friend.  She was born August 16, 1944 to the late Ralph and Alice Pratt and she lived her entire life in Kent County.  She was a middle child, placed right between two loving sisters, Ann Scott (Jim) and Carolyn Reed (Mike).  She married Gene Michaels on September 13, 1991 and they recently celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.  She will be missed by many family members including her husband, two sisters, many nieces and nephews and her children, Christine Hofstra (John), Dan Rogers (Theresa), Ann VerWys (Jim) and Shannon Novak (Russ) in addition to her eight grandchildren, Zachary Rogers (Ashley), Lauren Linde (Chase), Ben Rogers (Maaret), Annalyse Haarer (Brandon), Austin Stevens, Nate Rogers, Lucy and Josie Novak. Linda was a loving, funny, spunky and caring woman.  She was a long-time employee at Hartwell Mortgage Company.  Some special memories include her incredible cooking ability and the meals she shared with friends and family alike. There was a fresh cookie for every occasion.  She enjoyed reading, studying, and was actively involved in a women’s Bible study.  We are thankful that she is in heaven with her Savior. There will be a memorial service at a later date.

MARGARET G. ELDRED

c-obit-eldred-2Margaret G. Eldred 98 of Cedar Springs, passed safely into Jesus’ arms Monday, December 26, 2016 at Metro Health Hospital. Mrs. Eldred was born March 19, 1918 in Cedar Springs, Michigan the daughter of Howard and Muriel (Ferguson) French. During her life she had enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, ice fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting and agate picking. She was a lifelong member of the Free Methodist Church and was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. Surviving are her daughters, Tanya Eldred and Terri Matz; grandchildren and the light of her life, Riley Keith and Lucina Margaret; brother, Merlyn (SangKi) French; sister-in-law, Wilma Eldred; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Patricia Patin and Leah Sims Battle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith in 1997 and a brother, Kenneth French. A private family service will take place at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Cash officiating. A memorial service will be announced in the summer. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Indian School or Cedar Christian Academy.

Carol Lee Kidder, 78 of Cedar Springs, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Kidder was born January 13, 1938 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of Roy and Carol (Lankton) Dudley. She graduated from nursing school in 1958 as a Registered Nurse and worked at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She was an avid Michigan State Fan and enjoyed golfing, traveling and trips with friends. Surviving are her children, Sharon (Todd) Freeland, Steven (Lisa) Kidder, Wilma Brown, Clare (Constance) Kidder, Carol (James) McInnis; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard and a sister, Judy Rosenberger. The family will greet friends Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Cedar Springs. Pastor Steve Lindeman officiating. Private interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Kevin C. Quist 56 of Cedar Springs, died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Campus. Kevin was born April 5, 1960 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Chester and Dorothy (Fryling) Quist. He had worked for Amway Corp. since 1994 as a fabricator and welder. He enjoyed being an artist welder as a hobby. Surviving are his wife, Kimberly, whom he married on August 7, 1982; children, Jason Kohn, Korey Kohn and her fiancé, Philip Borrelli, Kevin M. Quist; parents, Chet and Dorothy Quist; sister, Jackie Mourer; cousins, nieces and nephews. Kevin had many special friends at Amway who have been very good to him during his illness. He recently connected with some friends from high school, and Dave Nester who helped him meet Kim years ago. The family will greet friends and celebrate his life on Saturday, December 10th from 11 – 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Bible Church, 361 Pine St., Cedar Springs with a short memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Wayne Cash officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Jerry Lynn Avery


c-obit-averyJerry Lynn Avery, 77 of Cedar Springs went into the loving arms of his Savior on Thursday, November 17, 2016 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born March 19, 1939 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Donald and Caroline (Townes) Avery. Jerry had a thirty four year career as a police officer, serving in the Kent County Sheriff’s Department and before that, the Cedar Springs Police Department.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, flying, bicycling and time with his grandkids. He was a member of Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church and the Northwest Soaring Club of Frankfort where he served as an instructor.  He was also a member of the Bad Bikers Bicycle Club, where he was known as the “Baddest Biker”. Surviving are his wife, Peggy (Beals) whom he married on November 12, 1957; sons, Mike (Denise) Avery, Tim (Kim) Avery; grandchildren, Sarah (Jordan) Brygal, James (Jessica) Edwards, Andy Avery, Jessica Martin, Jamie Jeffries III, Samantha Avery, Shelby Avery; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Leon (Janet) Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joe (Jean) Avery, David Avery; sister, Madeline (Stan) Piasecki. The family will greet friends Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service will be held Monday, Nov. 21 at Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church. Pastors Bill Johnson and Chuck Smith officiating. Interment Courtland Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Faith Hospice.
