ARLENE WESCHE


Arlene Abbey (Shick) Wesche, age 91, of Cedar Springs, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at the Brook Retirement Home, Big Rapids, MI. Arlene was born on July 16, 1929 at her home in Sand Lake MI, the daughter of John and Ivah Shick. She came to know her Lord and Savior at the age of 12 at the First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs (was a member for over 70 years). She graduated from Sand Lake High School in 1947. She met the love of her life, August John “Bud” Wesche in 1948 and on June 23, 1950 they were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs. Arlene was one of three sisters whose husbands are brothers. Arlene and August had 4 children together. If asked what was the most important to her she would always say “her family.” She was a hard worker all her life, working at several factories in Grand Rapids, Wolverine World Wide in Rockford, Cedar Springs Public Schools as a classroom aide and at Great Day in Cedar Springs in the Deli (food preparation). Arlene loved to camp and deer hunt with her husband and several family members, x-country ski by moonlight (with the love of her life), travel the country side (especially the U.P.) and spend time with family and friends. She was very proud of the beautiful afghans she made for her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, baker and so enjoyed to prepare meals at holidays for her family. Arlene was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by her four children, Daniel (Bev) Wesche of Big Rapids, Linda (Bill) Williams of Grand Rapids, Gregg Wesche of Sand Lake and Sandy (Don) Richard of Cedar Springs; grandchildren, Amber (Christopher) Jenson, Erin Wesche, Jason (Claire) Williams, Jeffrey Williams, Nicholas (Sara) Wesche, Shastyn Nelson, Heather (Eric) Bagge, Logan (Kristina) Shepherd, Zack (Brittany) Richard, Jenny (Tony) Smith; great-grandchildren, Derek, Lula, Roland, Harper, Eliza, Lindsey, Kiera, Liam, Toby. She is survived by sisters, Beverly (Phillip) Wesche, Verna (Richard) Wesche (note: Phillip and Richard Wesche are brothers of August Wesche Jr.); brother, Fred (Carol) Shick; brother-in-law, Gerald (Gloria) Wesche; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Houghton, Rose Hunter and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 56 years, August John Wesche Jr., parents, John and Ivah Shick; siblings and in-laws, Robert and Jean Shick, Harvey Shick, Donna and Orvin Reed, Berniece and Nelson VerStrate, Edward and Beverly Wesche, Jackie and Joseph Chorman, Mike Houghton. Mom, you will forever be loved and greatly missed by each of us, but we find comfort in knowing you will be watching over us … Heaven has welcomed a new angel! HAROLD L. POTTER


Harold L. Potter age 82 of Cedar Springs, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at his home. Harold was born June 2, 1938 in Cedar Springs, MI the son of Merritt and Beulah (Sneathen) Potter. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-60. He grew up on a dairy farm and had been a leader with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Red Flannel Rod & Gun Club where he taught hunter safety classes. Surviving are his wife, Helen whom he married on August 5, 1961; children, Harold “Les” (Denise) Potter Jr, Eileen (Randy) Driesenga, Emmett (Sonila) Potter, Elizabeth (Jim) Johnson; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Donovan (Jane) Potter, Daniel (Alice) Potter; sister, Elsie (Bob) Sly; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carl Potter. The family greeted friends Tuesday, December 15 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service was held Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at Camp Lake Baptist Church 12150 N. Division, Sparta. Pastor Dennis Tyson officiating. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. YVONNE J. HENDRICK



Yvonne J. Hendrick (Brownell) age 88 of Pierson died Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Green Acres of Cedar Springs. Yvonne was born August 22, 1932 in Walker Township, MI the daughter of Leon and Thelma (Geer) Fox. Surviving are her children, Douglas (Edie) Brownell, Debra (Hank) Hemmes, Darcy (Jim) Wilcox, Denise (Scott) Fisk; grandchildren, Jamie Brownell, Sara Jestila, Kyle (Tiffany Bannen) Wilcox, Melissa Fisk, Scott (Melanie Magoon) Fisk, Jr; great-grandchildren, Audrey, Evelyn, Madison, Lane; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Brownell and Darwin Hendrick; special friend, Tony Husar; siblings, Norris, Erwin, Beverly and Barbara. A private family graveside service was held on Wednesday, December 9 at Solon Township Cemetery. Mr. Craig Caswell speaking. ESTHER L. ANDERSON


Esther L. Anderson age 73 of Cedar Springs, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2020 at her home. Esther was born March 22, 1947 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Hattley and Arlene (Ballard) Rector. She retired from Forest Hills Central Middle School in 2007. She was a tomboy growing up and enjoyed camping and the pool at her home. She loved her grandchildren and taught them how to cook, she was always there for her family. Surviving are her husband, Carl whom she married on May 25, 1968; sons, Michael, Aaron (Lisa); grandchildren, Hannah, Abby and Brayden; sisters, Carol (Chuck) Mackus, Linda (Gary) Nead; brother-in-law, Fred Andrus; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lois Andrus. The family will greet friends Friday, November 27th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. A private family service will follow the visitation. JOHN L. MASON


John L. Mason age 78 of Ensley Township, Sand Lake went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 20, 2020. John was born March 9, 1942 in Walker, MI the son of Orval and Ethel (Mapes) Mason. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Steelcase. John was an amateur and professional boxer and went on to coach amateur boxing for 40 years. He impacted hundreds of lives as a coach. He was true American Patriot and also enjoyed hobby farming. His faith in God and trusting Jesus Christ as his Savior was very important to him. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; children, John (Shelly) Mason, Ron (Elizabeth) Mason, Brian (Lisa) Mason, Angela (Barry) Remlinger, Jennifer (Todd) Magoon; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Visitation and service was held Tuesday, November 24th at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Pastor Arthur Barton from Harvest Baptist Church, Grant officiated. Interment North Ensley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Harvest Baptist Church.

Michael A. Hanes age 31 of Cedar Springs died Thursday, November 19, 2020. Mike was born November 20, 1988 in Grand Rapids, MI. He enjoyed fishing and outdoor activities. He was a friend to many and loved his children. ALICE J. CASAVANT


Alice J. Casavant age 20 died unexpectedly Wednesday, November 18, 2020 in Detroit. Alice was born December 7, 1999 in Detroit the daughter of James and Rebecca (Nalezyty) Casavant. She graduated from Cedar Springs High School in 2018 and was studying illustration at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit. Alice loved art, video games and anime. But most of all she loved her friends and those around her. She was a loving and caring person who went out of her way to care for those in need. Surviving are her parents, James and Rebecca; brother, Zack; sister, Kaeleigh; grandparents, Evelyn Nalezyty, Joan and Louis Casavant; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Walter Nalezyty. Billie Jo Clark age 69 of Sparta passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus. Billie was born October 5, 1951 in Lansing, MI the daughter of William and Betty (Paepke) Baxter. She enjoyed shopping, camping and day trips to the casino. She was a member of the Cedar Springs American Legion. She loved her family and was a true southern lady. They loved her southern sayings and infectious laugh. Surviving are her husband, Donald; sons, Billy (Lorri) Garlick, Cliff Garlick; step-daughter, Carley (Josh) Baeseman; grandchildren, Danielle (Jason) Justice, Brock (Ali) Garlick, Lacy Garlick, Emma, Addison and Tank Baeseman; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Karson and Everett; sisters, Sharon Sheller and Shelia Ingraham; nieces and nephews. MAX W. COLE


Max W. Cole age 85 of Cedar Springs, died Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus. Max was born August 8, 1935 in Cedar Springs, MI the son of Waldo and Mary (Day) Cole. He was a lifelong farmer and hauled milk for over 40 years. Max enjoyed antique collecting and was a previous member of the John Deere two-cylinder club. He served on the founding Courtland Township Fire Board. You were only a stranger for a short time with Max, he enjoyed talking with people and getting to know them. Surviving are his wife, Lucinda “Cindy”; daughter, Karen Sanders; granddaughter, Jennifer (Jason) Lund; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Kinsley and Madison; brother, Bill (Kathy) Cole; in-laws, Gloria Cole, Joyce Cavner, Reta McKee, Patrick Holland and Gerald Parker; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin; his parents; siblings, Beverly Parker, Ruthann Baxter, Patricia Holland, Art Cole, James Cole. Sherrie Lee Logsdon passed from this life and into the arms of Jesus her Savior on October 29, 2020. Visitation hours at Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs were November 1. Memorial service was held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Cedar Springs, MI on Monday, November 2. Pastor Scott Sloan officiating. Sherrie left this world after a ten year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Rochester, New York on April 26, 1945. Married to Rev. Thomas Logsdon. Preceded in death by parents, Fredrick and Dorothy Hackett; brother, David Hackett; brother-in-law, Ron Rodgers; daughter, Mary Beth James; granddaughter, Abbey Logsdon. Survived by husband Thomas; sister, Darlene Rodgers; sister-in-law, Ann Hackett; brother, Timothy (Helena) Hackett; sister, Rebecca Hackett; sister, Jane Hackett; brother, Michael Hackett; children, Mark (Bonnie) Logsdon AL; son-in-law, Marlin James NY, Thomas (Amy) Logsdon NY, Rebecca (Charles) Klompstra MI, Christina (Derek) Zinn MI; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Sherrie graduated from Pavilion Central in 1963. Attended Tennessee Temple University. Assisted her husband in establishing three churches in upstate New York: Faith Baptist Morrisville, Grace Baptist Dansville, Cornerstone Baptist Geneseo. Foster care parent of twelve children. Avon Sales Representative and Manager for thirty years. Owner and operator of Rplace Ranch in Cedar Springs, Michigan. Sherrie was known for her joyful laugh and sense of humor. She was admired for her high energy, determined (some might even say spunky) personality. She was a top competitor in the game of spoons. She was a lover of all animals but especially of her horses and kittens. She participated in the Genesee Valley Hunt and spent many years teaching young equestrians at RPlace Ranch. On any given day, in any season, you would find her outside, except on Sundays where she gathered to worship at church. She dedicated her life to her husband of 57 years. She had an abundant love for Christ, her Savior, her family, and her church. Alternate service will be held in Pavilion, New York on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Logwell Acres. Visitation 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to Spectrum Health Hospice.

SHIRLEY A. PENLAND


Shirley A. Penland age 73 of Cedar Springs died Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at her home. Shirley was born June 23, 1947 in Tecumseh, MI the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Briem) Tase. At 17 she started working at General Motors and retired at 47. She then loved taking care of her grandchildren and traveling. Bob and Shirley loved going to the Soaring Eagle Casino. She is survived by her children, Kimberly (Dan) Foster, Eric (Heather) Shadley, Shawn (Emily) Shadley, Kelly (Brian) Hoffman; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Benedict. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on October 19, 2020. Visitation for Robert and Shirley will be Saturday, November 7, 2020 from 2-5:00 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs.
