White Creek School

Back in March, we ran a photo of a class from the old White Creek School taken in the late 1920s and asked if anyone could be identified. We got no response, but Bill Sevey, of Solon Township, brought in this photo of a later class, he says was taken in the 1943-44 school year. “I’m the tall kid in the back,” he said.

Sevey, who is almost 83, said he was in the eighth grade when the photo was taken, and the teacher is Mrs. Caldwell. Sevey said that back then, you could get a driver’s license when you were 14, and that he drove the class over to Casnovia to take the 8th grade exam. “I drove back and forth to school for about 6 weeks when Dad broke his hip,” he explained.

White Creek School was District No. 3 in Solon Township, with a fraction of Nelson Township. It was established in 1860 in a log house near the northeast corner of Egner and White Creek. According to the Cedar Springs Story, it was at one time known as the Fairchild School, because it sat near the property of Asel B. Fairchild. The log house was later replaced with a frame house. It was the first country school to annex to the Cedar Springs School District No. 5 in 1956.
