A Grand Rapids man that struck a bicyclist on August 19 and then left the scene, is now being charged in the man’s death.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, Benjamin VanderPloeg, of Grand Rapids, was traveling westbound on Cannonsburg Road, east of Chauncey Avenue on August 17, about 8:19 p.m., when he struck bicyclist Charles Driggers, 66, from behind. The driver then left the scene.

VanderPloeg was later arrested and charged with driving while license suspended causing serious injury, and failing to stop at a serious injury accident in relation to this incident. However, the victim died on August 26 of his injuries, and two new charges were added Wednesday, August 31: driving while license suspended causing death; and failing to stop at a serious injury accident causing death.

Bond was set at $200,000. The suspect is still in custody.

Driggers was reportedly training for an Iron man competition when the crash occurred.

A Grand Rapids man is being held on $200,000 bond in the Kent County Jail after he struck a bicyclist then left the scene in Cannon Township.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, the crash occurred on Wednesday, August 17, at 8:19 p.m. on Cannonsburg Road, east of Chauncey Avenue. Witnesses at the scene reported that a 66-year-old bicyclist, traveling westbound on the shoulder, had been struck from behind by a westbound white passenger car, who then left the scene.

The victim, Charles Lewis Driggers, 66, was transported by Aeromed to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in critical condition.

Investigators with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office located and seized the vehicle involved in the crash, and charged Benjamin A. Vander Ploeg, of Grand Rapids, with driving while license suspended causing serious injury, and failing to stop at a serious injury accident in relation to this incident.

Bicyclist causes accident

A bicyclist crossing West Muskegon Street caused an accident Sunday when it failed to yield to oncoming cars. According Cedar Springs Police, they were called to the scene where the White Pine Trail crosses West Muskegon at about 10:55 a.m. Sunday, June 26. A vehicle was reportedly headed west on Muskegon when a bicyclist rode across the road in front of them. They slammed on their brakes, causing a second car to hit the first one. The bicyclist fled the scene. Assisting at the scene was the Cedar Springs Fire Department and Rockford Ambulance. There were no injuries. There are stop signs on the White Pine Trail at all intersections, and police would like to remind bicyclists that they are required to obey all traffic laws.
