Inmate dies while awaiting trial

Joseph Richard Hanna

An inmate at the Kent County Correctional Center who was facing homicide charges for a fatal crash earlier this year has died.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was doing a routine check at approximately 10 p.m. Friday, November 30, and found that inmate Joseph Richard Hanna, 40, of Sparta, was found in medical distress due to an apparent suicide attempt.

“Despite life saving measures by both correctional and medical staff, Joseph Richard Hanna died at approximately 10:41 p.m.,” said Sgt. Joel Roon.

Hanna had been incarcerated at the Kent County Correctional Facility since May 16, 2018 and was in pretrial status on charges of Homicide–Murder 2nd Degree, OWI Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Death and Habitual Offender 2nd offense.

The charges stemmed from a January 4, 2018 crash, in which Hanna tried to pass another vehicle on 14 Mile Rd, west of Wabasis and collided with it. The other vehicle was driven by Jerry Kinsey, 48, of Sand Lake. The collision resulted in both vehicles losing control and Kinsey’s vehicle spinning into the westbound lane, where it was struck by a van driven by Gail Gansmiller, 48, of Sheridan. The passenger in Kinsey’s vehicle, his 20-year-old son, Joel Kinsey, of Sand Lake, was killed, and Jerry Kinsey was transported to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids in critical condition, where he died two weeks later.

Hanna and Gansmiller were treated for minor injuries.

Joel Kinsey was a 2016 graduate of Tri-County High School and was serving as a LCpl in the U.S. Marines at the time of the crash.

State police investigate attempted suicide

In the early morning of Monday, January 23, 2017, Troopers from MSP-Lakeview were assisting the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department to locate a man who had been in a yard threatening to shoot himself with a rifle in the Belding area. The subject left the scene after police were contacted. However, the investigation led troopers to a possible address in Oakfield Township where they might find him.

After they arrived on scene, troopers saw a man in a vehicle matching the given description. The man got out of the vehicle and troopers attempted to establish communication with him. The man immediately placed a rifle to his head and fired one round. There were no shots fired by responding officers.

After securing the scene, troopers performed first aid until medics arrived on scene. The man was transported by ambulance to Butterworth Hospital with a critical injury. The man, who was identified as the man they were looking for from the previous incident, is not expected to survive.

As of Wednesday, January 25, the police had no new information to pass along on the shooting.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing. Assisting at the scene was MSP-Rockford, Ionia County Sheriff Department, Kent County Sheriff Department, and Rockford Ambulance.
