Charlie and Kathy Prahl took daughter Katia and friend Maddi to visit Aunt Karen Shafer in Sun Lakes, Arizona over Spring Break. Kathy’s parents, Dave and Diane Taghon, joined them there and a great time was had by all. The four also went to Sedona and took the Pink Jeep Tour, spent time at the Grand Canyon, Jerome, Superstition Mountain, Canyon Lake and took the Verde Canyon Train Ride. No Spring Break is complete without The Cedar Post!

Jim and Bonnie Hutchinson, of Solon Township, recently took the Post with them to visit family in Arizona. While there they visited Willcox, Arizona, the birthplace of Rex Allen, “The Singing Cowboy,” who starred in 19 westerns. They also visited Roswell, New Mexico; White Sands National Park in NM; the Petrified Forest in Arizona; and the Monument Rocks (or Chalk Pyramids) a large group of chalk formations, in Oakley, Kansas. “It was worth the dusty drive,” they said.

The Post recently traveled to Tucson, Arizona with Darlene (Towns) Wirtz, of Ionia, to visit her sister Jean (Towns) Peterson. Jean and Darlene are graduates of Cedar Springs High School, and both were Red Flannel Queens. Darlene, pictured on the left, was RF Queen in 1949, and Jean, on the right, was the 1948 RF Queen.

The Post recently spent some family time with Walt Bouck, Pam and Cole Guarisco, and Brenda, Shane, Tyler and Trevor Robart in Tuscon, Arizona.

While there, they went up Mount Lemmon, with a summit elevation of 9,159 feet. “It was beautiful up there,” said Pam. “We drove up and also took a ski lift.”

“There is a great story on how it got its name,” she explained. “Mount Lemmon was named in honor of Sara Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with Native American guides, by mule and foot, in 1881, the same year as the gunfight at the OK Corral.”

Their photo with the Post was take at Mount Lemmon. They also visited Tombstone.

“It was so beautiful. God is great,” remarked Pam.

Chris and Kelly Moleski, along with boys Jaydon, Carter, and Elliot, traveled to Arizona for Spring Break. They took two special visitors with them—The Cedar Post and “Flat Gran.” While the Post seems to have ventured to Arizona many times recently (as chronicled in recent issues), this was a first for Flat Gran.  Their great-grandmother, Florence Eylander, had dreamed of visiting the Grand Canyon. She was surprised to find that a Flat Stanley version of her was accompanying the family on their trip. Florence was delighted by the daily emails and pictures she received that documented her adventures throughout the beautiful state of Arizona, including climbing to the summit of Camelback Mountain; hiking and climbing the beautiful red rocks of Sedona; visiting Slide Rock State Park; exploring a cave in Flagstaff; taking in an Arizona Coyote and an Arizona Diamondbacks/Cubs game (Go Cubs!); and visiting the Grand Canyon.

Wow! It sounds like both Flat Gran and the rest of the Moleski family had a great time! Thanks so much for taking us with you!

Rose Hankins, of Courtland Township, recently traveled to Arizona to visit old friends from Paradise Park, where Rose lived for 19 years, getting away from the snow in Michigan winters. She saw a lot of her old friends, and enjoyed her visit. Rose is shown here with her friends Nita, Jo and Lola, at Apache Junction, Arizona.

Dean and Kris Anderson and their son, Austin, recently traveled with the Post to Flagstaff, Arizona to visit both the San Francisco Peaks and the Grand Canyon.

“What beautiful places,” said Dean. “The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff up I-17 is one of the most beautiful drives you can ever make. Gaining more than a mile in altitude, in about a 150-mile span. Gorgeous! Then to top it off the next day, on a visit to one of the World’s 7 natural wonders (Grand Canyon) the was icing on the cake,” remarked Dean. “I would also highly recommend dinner at Black Carts Steakhouse Saloon and Musical Revue. Great Steak and very entertaining.”

Walt and Lora Bouck, of Cedar Springs, and Tucson, Arizona, had a visit over spring break from their daughter, Brenda Robart and grandsons Shane, Tyler and Trevor, also of Cedar Springs. “We enjoyed beautiful weather, warm temperatures, and blue skies,” wrote Lora.

While there the family went to the Sonoma Desert, rode the ski lift on Mt. Lemmon (where they took a photo with The Post), visited Colossal Caves, went horseback riding, and took a stagecoach ride in Tombstone.

Lora said the ski resort didn’t open this year for lack of snow. “There was only a one-foot of base on the mountain, and they need at least three feet of base to open,” explained Lora. “The last time it was closed was back in 1984.”
