Red Flannel days and knights rock

The skies were blue, the sun was warm, and there was a sea of red as far as the eyes could see—Red Flannel Day 2011 was the perfect ending to two jam-packed weekends of Red Flannel fun. And the royal theme featuring knights was a big hit.
“The Theme “Knight & Day Red Flannels are Here to Stay!” sparked creativity and imagination in all of the floats and events, with a lot of Knights in Shining Armour,” said Red Flannel Festival president Michele Andres.
This year the festival welcomed Tom Daldin and a crew of three from “Under The Radar Michigan,” a television show there to film Red Flannel Day. Andres said the crew arrived in Cedar Springs about noon. Daldin wore a blue shirt, and was “arrested” by the Keystone Kops and put into jail, a great job done by Keystone Dave Barnes! Tom conducted interviews, a historical perspective by Bill Pollock (his parents owned Pollock’s store where the original Red Flannels were sold) and did an interview about the Festival itself with Festival Title Sponsor Tim Mabie of CS Manufacturing. They filmed until the end of the Parade, and Andres said the producer was very excited about the “Sea of Red” downtown just prior to the Parade.
“Tom told me that he loved the positive energy of this Festival, and that in all of the festivals he’s attended, this was the most hospitable and nice. Tom also commented that he loved the historical aspect of 72 years,” noted Andres.
Daldin told Andres that the show would air in June of 2012, and be posted on their website, and probably then be in reruns all summer, great publicity for the Festival next year!
The festival saw some new events this year, including the Celtic highlander games, and the Cornhole tourney.
All events this year (arts and crafts fair, marketplace, etc., were all sold out.
The Parade had over 111 entries, not including the winning cars of the Car Shows and tractors. Sue Harrison graciously donated her time to announcing the Parade again this year.
The car show had over 160 entries, and the fireworks show was also a big hit.
Unfortunately, the Remote Control Airplane demonstration had to be cancelled because of the windy conditions, making it unsafe to fly the model airplanes.
“The all volunteer Red Flannel Board of Directors and Chairpersons did an outstanding job again this year,” said Michele Andres, President. “The weather is always a factor, and determines the financial success. It is a huge undertaking that begins in January of each year, and there is so much that happens behind the scenes that no one really fully appreciates or experiences. As the Festival continues to grow, there’s definitely more leadership needed for many events and would invite everyone to do just a little bit to ensure the continued success of the Festival for another 72 years!”
Planning for the 73rd Festival will begin in January of 2012. Those interested in volunteering should email president@redflannelfestival.org or call 616-696-2662.

Red Flannel royalty crowned

This year’s 2011 Red Flannel Queen Tranaya Verstrat with court members Kaitlyn Caron and Esther Couturier.

The 2011 Red Flannel Pageant, held last Saturday night at Cedar Springs High School, was a royal affair, complete with a king, knights, and of course, a new Red Flannel Queen!
This year’s 2011 Red Flannel Queen is Tranaya Verstrat, daughter of James and Tasha Verstrat. Court members are Kaitlyn Caron, daughter of Tim and Lisa Caron, and Esther Couturier, daughter of Michael and Debra Couturier.
This year’s theme was “Believe in Red Flannel Knights.” Local resident and teacher, John Willette was the emcee, and dressed as a King. The set decorations included a castle and moat, throne, and the Red Flannel Festival’s 7-foot Knight in shining armor.
Susan Reason performed an excellent rendition of the National Anthem while the Cedar Springs American Legion Glen Hill post presented the flags.
Entertainment was a beautiful dance, performed by 2010 Red Flannel Queen Tinsley Nulph, and in keeping with the theme, local musician Sam Peterson played several songs on his bagpipe, dressed in a traditional kilt.
The contestants selected Red Flannel Festival history questions from the “King” in a beautiful gold goblet, delighting the crowd.
The Knight theme carried through the Pageant with their opening number, and the contestant fathers escorting their daughter in the evening gown portion.
“Justin Harnden and the CSHS Drama Club did a tremendous job of technical support for the Pageant, and a special thanks to Superintendent Ron McDermed and the CSPS School Board for use of the beautiful auditorium,” said Red Flannel Festival President Michele Andres. “Cindy Patin directed the Pageant for the 14th year, and the entire team of volunteers did an outstanding job!”
There is still time to donate to the Queen Scholarship Fund. 100 percent of all donations are used for their college scholarships and are tax deductible. Please send a check to: Queen Scholarship Fund, PO Box 43, Cedar Springs, MI 49319.

Local show filming at Red Flannel Festival

Attend the Red Flannel Festival next Saturday and you could be on TV.
“We’re excited to share the news that the PBS Television Show, “Under the Radar Michigan” will be here on Saturday, Oct. 1, to film the Red Flannel Festival as one of the six coolest Festivals in the State of Michigan!” said festival president Michele Andres.
According to a news release, “the true mission of the program is to discover and uncover the thousands of incredible ‘under the radar’ people, places and things we may not know about in Michigan. Through this discovery, we hope to develop a deeper dimension of pride in our state.”
According to a note from the show’s host, Tom Daldin, they are broadcast on every PBS TV station across Michigan, and also have millions of viewers across Canada, Ohio and Wisconsin, and will be moving into the Chicago market this season. “Our fans are loyal and very engaged in the program. When we talk about a place, people travel long distances in great numbers for the experience… so it’s good for everyone. We often have people tell us that we literally  ‘doubled their business’… it’s a nice feeling to be able to do that!” he wrote.
In each episode, the UTR crew travels from city to city uncovering the people, places and things that make Michigan a great place to be. To learn more about Under The Radar Michigan, visit utrmichigan.com.  To become a fan of the program, visit the Under The Radar Michigan Facebook page and send in suggestions for future shows.
“Please help us spread the news to put our best red foot forward this year,” said Andres. “It’s phenomenal exposure for the festival, sponsors and supporters, business community, citizens and the entire community!”

Red Flannel results

We had beautiful weather for the first weekend of Red Flannel Festival 2011! There were lots of contests and activities going on, and listed below are some of the results.

5K run

Overall male winner was Brandon Smith, 31, with a time of 17:16.46.
Overall female winner was Cindy Kikkert-Penning, 45, at 20:42.09.
The first place team was Things 1 with a time of 1:37:04:00.
Visit www.playmakers.com/11results/11redFlannel.htm for all other 5K results.

The Post races to save the princess.

This princess could use a shave and a leg wax.

Bedraces

Taking first was Choice One Bank and winning best theme was Independent Bank (the judges must have liked Todd Hanson in a skirt). The Keystone Kops were there with their usual hijinks, and The Post will be doing an investigation on police corruption within their ranks, after seeing them not only hide the key to the castle, but instigating bystanders to jump on the beds, which slowed contestants down.

Taking first place was Mike Milanowski & Team Westside with Westside Chili.

Chili cook-off

The Chili Cookoff had 14 contestants, and Rand Ruwersma, Festival First VP, said ten were turned away. “We’re anticipating having a large tent next year to accommodate an even larger group next year,” said Rand. Taking first place was Mike Milanowski & Team Westside with Westside Chili.

Children’s  parade

The Children’s Parade had over 200 participants, a record! The local  4H Club, led by Cindy Karafa, was there with a fantastic petting zoo and Freddy the Clown was on hand for balloon animals and saxophone songs! Meghan Andres, Liz Tracy and Julie Tompkins distributed over 200 Fire Safety goody bags for the kids, and provided free refreshments.

Horseshoes

The horseshoe contest, an original Red Flannel event, took place next to Cedar Pub. Taking first was Wally Ewing and Harv Dumond.

Basketball shootout

No info was available at press time on the winners for the basketball shootout.

Red Flannel prince and princess

Princess Penelope Belk and Prince Diego Caballero.

Excitement filled the air at the Kent Theatre last Wednesday night, September 21, when kindergarteners and their families gathered to see who would be this year’s Red Flannel Prince and Princess.  “It is our biggest turn-out yet”, said Angie Slagter, chairperson. “I was excited to see more of our youth participating than in years past, it made for a very entertaining evening.”
The prince and princess are chosen through a random drawing of ticket entries.
Prince Diego Caballero, son of Schalese and Alvin Caballero, stood tall while being crowned and Princess Penelope Belk, daughter of Krystle and David Belk, looked gorgeous as she was crowned.  It was a magical night for these two and they have made their debut at the Queen’s pageant and will be in the Grand Parade on Saturday, and are hoping all other contestants will join them.

The 2011 Red Flannel Day Talent Show

Leah and Kim Pasley, “The Pasley Sisters”

The Kent Theatre on Main Street in Cedar Springs is once again hosting its annual Red Flannel Day Talent Show on Saturday, October 1, after the grand parade. The show this year features a rockabilly guitar performance by Paul Brailey, along with returning young crowd pleasers Alexis and Ryan Kaiserlian.  Also back this year to treat the crowd is banjo master Calder Baker, and the talented and delightful Karli Morehouse.
There is also quite an array of new acts this year, including Eric and Clare Freeman with a Vienesse Waltz, and the wonderful harmonies of the Pasley Sisters, Leah and Kim.  We have the young guitarist/singer Maddie Nichols, gifted Flamenco guitarist Ben Knapp, and the very talented singer/guitarist Joshua Kohns.  There is also an eye-popping performance of The Isis Wings with dancers Ann Knapp and Karen Jennings, along with Clare Freeman.

Clare Freeman

The Show starts directly after the Grand Parade (4:30 pm) on Red Flannel Day (Oct. 1) at the Kent Theatre at 8 North Main, downtown Cedar Springs. Tickets are $3.00 at the door.

New event: Firefighter parade

The Red Flannel Festival will be holding a brand new event on September 23—a nighttime firefighter parade—honoring those amazing heroes who put their lives on the line for us each and every day! The parade, consisting of firefighters, police, and other emergency vehicles, will begin about 9:30 p.m., after the Cedar Springs High School Varsity football game.
Staging will take place at the middle school off Northland Drive and 16 Mile. Vehicles will then travel to Red Hawk Elementary (off E. Muskegon) near the tennis courts, proceed north on First St, west on Elm, south on Main Street and west on E. Muskegon, and back to the school driveway by the tennis courts.
The vehicles will travel that route twice, once with sirens and lights flashing, and the second time in silence.
Free, small American flags will be distributed downtown by the Festival Board of Directors.
At least eight departments have confirmed they will be in the parade (including Cedar Springs), and Red Flannel Treasurer Heather Zenker is expecting more to register by the parade date.
“This is an exciting way to honor our local firefighters, the many outstanding volunteers who keep us safe,” said Zenker. “The Red Flannel Festival Board is proud to host the first event in downtown Cedar Springs and hope to make it an annual event.”
