Red Hawk boys cross finish strong at Regionals

Cedar Springs junior Espen Wood cruises to a 23rd place finish in 16:46 over the 5-kilometer course at Allendale High School.

The Boy’s Cross Country Team made the 40 minute trip to Allendale, MI on Saturday, October 30th to compete in the Division 1 Regional Championships.

In what is arguably one of the deepest Regionals in the State of Michigan, which saw 32 competitors run under 17 minutes for the 5k, the Red Hawks finished a respectable 10th out of 17 schools in a tightly contested race.

(L-R) Eli Malon, Carter Moleski, Gabe White & Espen Wood prepare for the start of the 2021 Regional Cross Country Championships.

The Red Hawks were once again led by junior standout Espen Wood. Espen covered the soggy 5-kilometer course in 16:46 which earned him 23rd place and narrowly missed an at large bid to next weekend’s State Championships in Brooklyn, MI. Senior Carter Moleski saved his best for last running a lifetime personal record (PR) of 17:19 garnering 39th place. Carter was followed by another Senior, Gabe White, who has been a stalwart for the boys team over the last 4 years (53rd – 17:55). Junior Eli Malon, who has come on strong the last 3 weeks after battling an early season injury, finished in 57th place (18:05). Right behind Eli was up and coming Freshmen Quinton Bell (18:05) who is hitting his stride at the right time and will be a force to reckon with in the years to come. Rounding out the Varsity squad were Sophomore Jack Sherburn (18:20) and Senior Gabe Minnich (18:54), who has been a fixture on the squad for four years showing steady improvement every season due to hours of dedication to the sport.

The Red Hawks also posted solid performances in the Post Regional Open Meet. Senior Cayden Steinebach ran a season’s best time of 18:11 to lead the charge. Not far behind was Sophomore Zach Reed in 18:30. Sophomores Eli Klynenberg and Brady Morrow finished in 19:03 and 19:13 respectively.  Freshmen Caleb VanSickle and Senior Alex Cole ran strong races crossing the finish line in 61st and 62nd place with identical times of 19:23.5.
