STEVEN JON DEFOUW

STEVEN JON DEFOUW

Adored husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son Steven Jon DeFouw was called home unexpectedly on October 22, 2020 at the age of 56. Steve was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was a graduate of Sparta High School. He worked in the produce industry for over 30 years. Steve’s greatest joy was taking care of his family. He was so proud of his wife, Dixie, his high school sweetheart. They were married for 33 years and blessed with two loving daughters, Stephanie and Jacqui and later two wonderful sons-in-law Andrew and Derek. Steve and Dixie were truly best friends and partners. Their beautiful example prepared their daughters for their own marriages. The love within the household extended beyond the immediate family to everyone who entered the home. Steve became a father-figure to all the girls’ friends, helping them just as he would his own daughters. Steve never let a loved one leave his home without telling them to drive safely and flashing the porch lights to say one final “I love you” before they drove out of sight. Steve was an avid golfer who loved spending summer days on the course with some of his oldest friends on his golf league Hack N’ Ale. He also participated in several charitable outings each year to benefit a variety of causes close to his heart. He loved spending time outdoors, taking his family on Jeep rides, and listening to music (as long as no one tried to sing along). Steve was adopted by his loving parents as a baby, and very recently experienced the joy of meeting his biological sister Michele. He was thrilled to get to know her and learn about their shared family connection. Steve was preceded in death by his father Ron DeFouw, his grandparents Jerry and Jean DeFouw and Oscar and Nina Cook, and his beloved Aunt Ida Cooper. He is survived by his devoted wife Dixie DeFouw (Esch), his adored daughters Stephanie (Andrew) Custer, Jacquelyn (Derek) Odren, and his mini-me, grandson Connell. Also surviving are his mother Nancy Burton, parents-in-law Richard and Glenda Esch, siblings Jeri DeFouw-Ashcraft, Michele (Trent) Rezny, Charlene Wassell, Christine (Gary) Borger, Ross Wozniak, and Rick Wozniak, and cherished Uncle Jack Cooper, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him, because to know him was to love him. The family received friends Tuesday, October 27 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Steve’s honor to the Alano Club of Kent County, 1020 College Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, www.gralanoclub.com.
