A Message from the Superintendent

A Message from the Superintendent

When the 2020/21 school year starts on September 8, it will have been 179 days since students were last in classrooms learning. Many will agree that it has been far too long since our students and teachers were together in person and engaged in the learning process. Fortunately, Cedar Springs students will now have opportunities to learn like never before. The upcoming school year will be built around students and teachers engaging in meaningful learning experiences both on campus and online.

The Apollo 13 mission, launched on April 11, 1970, did not go as planned. Several disruptions in the spacecraft’s systems resulted in a cancellation of the mission to land on the moon and put the lives of the astronauts in peril. Fortunately, after several tense days and remarkable effort, the crew splashed down safely in the ocean. The launch of the 2020-2021 school year on September 8, 2020, is Cedar Springs Public Schools’ Apollo 13 moment.

We have launched our CS Red Hawks Online School for students desiring an option to learn remotely this year. Our hallways and classrooms were cleaned from top to bottom and are ready to welcome our students and staff when they arrive. We have updated our protocols to ensure that strict guidelines are followed daily and hourly to keep our students safe as they pursue their education. We have spent the summer selecting the “perfect” people to fill vacant positions. Chromebooks and classroom materials have been ordered and distributed to make the first day of school a success. Our team is ready! We can’t wait to greet students next week, both in-person and remotely!

Finally, please accept my heartfelt thanks to each member of the Red Hawk community who supported the District on August 4. Our District is made stronger through the support of the people who call Cedar Springs home. Your efforts are making CSPS an incredible place to learn, work, and play. We can! We will! We are! TOGETHER!

With gratitude and respect, Scott B. Smith, Superintendent
