NANCY LEE MERRITT


Nancy Lee (Heiss) Merritt, age 74, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Campus, Grand Rapids, after a long battle with cancer. She was born February 24, 1945 in Tampa, FL the daughter of Jack and Betty (Martin) Heiss. Nancy grew up enjoying working in the fields with her dad and grandfather, playing basketball and performing as a majorette while graduating from Cedar Springs High School in 1963. She married Jack Hilliker in 1964. Together they settled down in Greenville, MI where they had two sons, Dan and Dennis. She spent countless hours being involved with their Boy Scout troops, watching band performances and sporting events. Nancy attended Davenport College where she would eventually work as a Resident Director from 1985 to 1995. After this, Nancy moved to Kalkaska, MI where she retired from the County Courthouse in 2011. Nancy was proud to be involved with the Cedar Springs Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (Sophie deMarsac Campau chapter) and the Kalkaska VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her “daddy” Melvin J. Heiss. She is survived by her loving mother, Betty Heiss; sons, Dan Hilliker, Dennis Hilliker (Shelly); grandchildren, Andrew Hilliker (Kayla), Aaron Hilliker, Jackquelyn Hilliker, Emily Hilliker and Stephen Hilliker; brother, Robert Hey (Judy); many cousins. The family greeted friends Friday, Sept. 27 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service was held Saturday, Sept. 28 at Peace Lutheran Church, 1225 12 Mile Road NW, Sparta. Pastor Bryan Schneider-Thomas officiating. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Endowment Fund or Cedar Springs Historical Society.
