The CSYW club sent wrestlers all over the state last Sunday to compete in tournaments in Holland West Ottawa, Clio, and Shepard, and the Red Hawks did not disappoint, returning with 19 medals.

With the majority of wrestlers traveling to Holland, Cedar finished 6th with 16 pins (28:54) and 4th in total match points with 251. Kevin Fitzgerald was happy with how the team wrestled. “As we get closer and closer to the state tournament it’s great to see so many of our wrestlers peaking at the right time,” he said.

On Sunday, January 28, 13 of the Red Hawks’ 19 total medals were won at the Holland West Ottawa tournament. The 2012-2014 age group had another strong showing with Brycen Alber continuing his domination of the 46lb weight class with a 1st place finish. Another set of Red Hawks who always find themselves in the medal rounds were Deacon Reynolds (46B) and Dillon VanDyke (61), who took 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

In the Novice 2010-2011 age group, Avery Gitchel, in his first tournament of the year, had a 3rd place finish in the 49lb weight class; Eli Gunderson took 1st in the 52lb bracket; and Jaxon Fitzgerald had one of his strongest finishes of the season with a 2nd place medal in the 67lb weight class.

The 2008-2009 age group also did some damage as four Red Hawks medaled. Spencer Schoenborn had a 2nd place finish in the Open 69lb weight class, and Isaac Gitchel finished 2nd in the Novice 63lb bracket, in what was his first tournament of the year. Caleb Austin finished 3rd in the Novice 75lb bracket and Liam Kelley had a 2nd place finish in a combined Novice bracket of 95 and 100lbs.

Finishing up the tournament for the Red Hawks was Kaiden Dreyer, who had a 4th place finish in the Open 2006-2007, 90lb bracket. In the combined Novice 85/90lb bracket, Rory Schoenborn took 1st place, and in the Open 2004-2005 130lb weight class Gabe Gair had a 2nd place finish.

One wrestler traveled to Clio for another GREIGTS tournament and came back with a medal and that Red Hawk was Chasyn Winchel. Chasyn overcame a tough bracket to place 2nd in the 72lb weight class.

Five Red Hawks traveled to Shepard and five medals were brought back to Cedar Springs. In the 2008-2009 Open age division, Cade Troupe took 4th place in a combined bracket of 60/63lbs, and Deegan Pike had another strong showing in the 69lb weight class with a 1st place finish. Blake Falan and Jon Libera both continued their medal winning ways with Blake taking a 1st place finish in the combined bracket of 72/75lbs, and Jon Libera taking 2nd place in the 81lb bracket. Gavyn Byxbe finished things up for the Red Hawks with a solid 3rd place finish in the 2006-2007 open 100lb bracket.
