O-negative blood needed for girl battling cancer

Eleven-year-old Tegan Rose is being treated for cancer and needs O-negative blood—a rare blood type.

She’s had to wait for a life-saving blood transfusion due to lack of area donations.

For many, St. Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate Irish heritage. For Tegan Rose, of Spring Lake, March 17, 2017 was the start of her cancer treatment. She turned 11 years old two days later.

“Her lucky four-leaf clover sticker didn’t turn out to be so lucky,” said Angela Rose, Tegan’s mom, before correcting herself. “Actually, if you look at it, it turned out to be really lucky—we caught the cancer early.”

Tegan is now in remission, but has to undergo chemotherapy over the next year or two. And with that comes a need for blood, a sometimes difficult task because of her blood type: O-negative. People with that blood type can only receive O-negative blood, and because only nine percent of Michigan’s population has that blood type, it’s been an issue for the preteen.

Tegan Rose and her mother Angela.

“We were at the hospital and Tegan needed blood, but we had to wait for someone to drive it over from Detroit,” said Angela.

Unfortunately, summer is a time when blood donations are at their lowest – there is currently a critical need for O-Negative blood donations. That’s why Michigan Blood is working to get enough donations to help people just like Tegan.

Anyone with O-Negative blood who donates twice between July 10th and October 31st will be entered for a chance to win a YETI cooler filled with Michigan-made merchandise. What’s more, because O-Negative is the universal donor, their blood can go to help save people across Michigan – including Tegan.

Michigan Blood is the primary provider of blood and blood products for more than 60 hospitals in Michigan, including Spectrum Health, Metro Health University of Michigan Health, and Mercy Health St. Mary’s. Donations given outside of Michigan Blood do not have direct local impact. Donating blood with Michigan Blood helps save the lives of patients in Michigan hospitals. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) who weighs at least 112 pounds may be eligible to donate, although females age 18 and under must weigh 120 pounds or more. Blood donors should bring photo ID. To schedule an appointment, please call 1-866-MIBLOOD (642-5663) or schedule online at https://donate.miblood.org.

  1. Dorothy says:

Yea no donation centers around here close by for MI blood or i would donate

  2. Sarah says:

I have the type that mixes with everyone. If thats the right kind…?

  3. My name is Shelly Bantien. I am the mother of 3 wonderful sons. My oldest son Randy is 31 and type O-. He is more then willing to donate to Tegan but he does not want to become a constant donor. If there is anything he can do just please let’s us know and we shall do all we can for Tegan. I love her name? Randy is a very healthy young man and donated blood all throughout high school. As I sat here reading a Tegan story my oldest came to my bedroom door and knocked. He came in and sat as I was silently reading. So when I seen the O- blood being needed I looked at Randy and said. Hey would you be willing to donate blood to a beautiful young lady. He without hesitation said of course I will help. My email is sjbantien@icloud.com and my cell is 616-328-3276

  4. angela says:

Can you donate if you have diabetes or treated Graves Disease?
If so, next Michigan blood drive near here, my daughter and I will donate as we both have O-….

  5. Stephany says:

You def need to have a couple of drives in or around Muskegon. I do not carry that type but would not be able to donate anyway since you arent around here. I can keep trying to get others to donate but with them so far away I’m not sure how much help it would be.

  6. Marget says:

My blood type is O- and I would love to donate to help

  7. Leslie says:

I am O negative i will try and hit the one on the 19 here in big rapids.

  8. Tracy says:

If only blood donated through Michigan Blood stays in Michigan, what happens to Red Cross blood donations? Those must impact someone, right?

  9. Amber says:

I have O- w/ Rh- If I donated in my area (Kalamazoo), could my blood make it to her???

  10. JoEllen Lilly says:

If there was a place in MI i would donate for her because im o negative and i try to donate every chance i get to help people.

  11. Tom says:

Sarah-yes you have O-, the type she needs. Please consider donating.

  12. Molly says:

I have O negative blood, and I live in Spring Lake as well. I would be this little girl’s personal donor if someone could guarantee to set it up that way so she doesn’t ever have to wait for a blood transfusion again!

  13. Nikohl says:

Is there anywhere in Wisconsin that I can donate that will send it to you?

  14. Mandy says:

Im O-, are there donation sites on the East side of the state? I’m in “the thumb”.

  15. Sarah says:

I have O negative blood type how can I donate close to yoi

  16. Diane says:

I wish there was a way they could get blood from here in Wisconsin. My husband and 2 of our sons are O negative. My husband can no longer donate, though, because he’s had cancer 3 times, Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Our sons can and are both legal ages and healthy.

  17. Ashley says:

Are we able to donate directly to her ?

  18. Jenni says:

I am O-, I will donate if their is a drive in Muskegon

  19. Hi all!

For some reason, we can’t reply directly to each comment, but we’ll do our best to answer everyone’s questions here:

    1) Unfortunately, Tegan is only ONE case like this – there are many others across Michigan who, just like her, need O-Negative blood on a regular basis (along with many other kids like Tegan who have other blood types and need it regularly). Because of this, we can’t guarantee your donation will go directly to her. However, it was because of a lack of donations that she had to wait for a transfusion previously. Donating regularly can make it so Tegan, and people like her, never have to wait! Even donating 2-3 times a year makes a HUGE difference!

    2) You CAN donate if you have diabetes! It just depends on the medications you’re taking – please email info@miblood.org if you have more specific questions. 🙂

    3) At the moment, we don’t do very much in Muskegon…but that’s because many aren’t holding drives! If you – or your place of work – would be willing to help us set up a blood drive, we’d LOVE to work on that!

    4) To those who’d like to donate from out-of-state, thank you! However, as we’re a state-specific blood organization, we can only accept donations given here in Michigan.

    5) For those wondering if there’s a drive near you, we have a great resource! Go to this site, type in your zip code, and see if there are any drives in your area – if there aren’t, please consider hosting one!: https://donate.miblood.org/donor/schedules/zip

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us at info@miblood.org, or by heading to our Facebook page: facebook.com/miblood

Thank you all so much for your interest in helping Tegan!!
