Man attempts to pick up 13-year-old

The Kent County Sheriff Department reported that a man tried to pick up a 13-year-old boy as he walked home from the bus stop after school Thursday, in Cannon Township.

The suspect reportedly pulled up next to the juvenile and said, “Boy, I’m supposed to give you a ride.” The youth said he had to call his mom first, and the man said, “No, it’s fine.” The boy then ran home, and the vehicle drove by the house and then left the area. Neither the man nor the vehicle are known to the boy or his family, and have not been seen in the area before.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 50 years old, 6-feet tall, slim build, with a short black goatee. The suspect was wearing a green winter hat and a brown leather jacket.

The vehicle is described as an older model four door sedan, black with a greenish tint and all four hubcaps were missing. There is rust covering the lower portion of the doors with several rust holes visible in the body of the car.

According to Deputy Pat Frederick, with the Community Services Unit, the young man responded very well to the incident. “He did not approach the car, told the suspect he was calling his mom and then ran home and locked the door. He remembered a good description of the suspect and vehicle. His mother called the Sheriff’s Department in a timely manner to report the incident,” said Frederick.

He added that parents should remember to talk to their children about “Stranger Danger.” Suspicious vehicles can be reported to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at 616-632-6100.
