Crowd turns out for Solon park fundraiser

Web-N-Solon-fundraiser1Web-N-Solon-fundraiser2The Velzy Park Planning Committee’s first fund-raising event was a tremendous success last Friday, according to Solon Township clerk Mary Lou Poulson.

The event raised $1,000 to go toward development of the new park, which will be on the acreage surrounding the township offices on Algoma.

Tickets for the Spaghetti Dinner were sold prior to the event and at the door. About 80 people packed the room decorated for Valentines Day. Park committee members manned the display of Velzy Park concept drawings and shared information with diners as they mingled.  Kevin, from Kelly’s Restaurant catered the dinner. Park Committee Chairperson Shelly Aardema introduced emcee Reese Rickards, who also ran a lively auction for the desserts donated by area residents. Some were shared at the table and some taken home to enjoy.  A 50/50 raffle was held, with one lucky township resident benefitting as well as the Park.

The next event is in the planning stages and will help to raise funds for the walking trail and celebrate its construction. The Velzy Park Committee is hoping to coincide the ribbon-cutting ceremony with the opening day of the Farmer’s Market on June 11.
