Newaygo man killed in crash with ambulance

A multi-vehicle accident on M-37 Wednesday involving an ambulance resulted in one person dead and five others injured.

According to information released by the Michigan State Police, a Life EMS ambulance was headed southbound on M-37 between 15 Mile and Phelps about noon Wednesday, July 1, and northbound traffic began slowing down. Douglas Lee Westra, 63, of Newaygo, was traveling northbound, and tried to avoid the traffic slowing in front of him, and went off the roadway, where he lost control in the gravel, and went back out on to the road, where he collided with the ambulance. The impact knocked his vehicle into a third vehicle.

Westra was pronounced dead at the scene. Five others were also injured and transported to the hospital by AeroMed and Life EMS ambulance. Their injuries are unknown at this time.
