CROP Walk in Howard City

Plans are under way for this year’s CROP Walk against hunger in Howard City.  The walk has become an annual event each fall in the Panhandle section of Montcalm County. The purpose of the walk is to raise money to help feed the hungry CROP, which stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, and is sponsored by Church World Services. This is a cooperative ministry of over 35 denominations across the country working together to erase poverty.

This year’s Crop Walk is slated for Sunday, October 12 at 1:30. The walk will start at Ensley Park in Howard City and will go for approximately 4.5 miles before ending back at the park. And if the prospect of walking over 4 miles is not all that enticing, walkers are not required to go the whole distance, but can do whatever portion they are comfortable with. Refreshments will be served to all participants at the end of the walk.

The CROP Walk itself is an over 65-year-old tradition that has raised millions of dollars. Each year walks are held in communities all over the country. Not only is money raised, but volunteers endeavor to raise public awareness of the problems of world hunger. The motto “We walk because they walk “ sums up the spirit of volunteers as they strive to make a difference.

One very important aspect of the CROP Walk is that 25 percent of all money raised stays in the local community. In our area this is the Helping Hands food pantry in Howard City. The rest of the money goes to Church World Services  to help fund their many programs both in the US and throughout the world. These programs cover a wide spectrum, ranging from emergency food in Africa, to supplying agricultural tools to farmers in S. America, to to building schools in Asia.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a person or group looking to make a difference. For more information, interested parties are urged to contact Heritage United Methodist Church at 231-937-4310.
