A 22-year-old man sent to the hospital in critical condition after a boating accident on Wabasis Lake Monday has died.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, Jordan Lee Kooienga, 22, of Dorr, was operating a 1995 Sea Doo personal watercraft on Wabasis Lake in Oakfield Township Monday, August 5, when he was thrown from it about 12 p.m. His brother saw it happen, and immediately went to help him. Police said the victim was found floating face down and was pulled from the water and transported to shore by witnesses.

He was treated at the scene by Oakfield Fire and Rescue, and transported to Spectrum Butterworth by ambulance. He died at the hospital Tuesday.

Police said that Kooienga was wearing a lifejacket, and that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

According to a story in the Grand Rapids Press, a cousin of Kooienga’s told the newspaper that he died of a brain aneurysm.
