Former Sand Lake man killed at raceway

N-Sand-Lake-man-killed-Dale-WondergemA 1962 Cedar Springs graduate was killed in a freak accident at a raceway in California Saturday.

Dale Wondergem, 68, of Grass Valley, California, and formerly of Sand Lake, was at the Marysville Raceway Park in Yuba County Saturday evening, March 16, when a car careened off the racetrack and into the pit area, killing Wondergem and 14-year-old Marcus Johnson, the cousin of the 17-year-old race car driver, Chase Johnson.

Wondergem was reportedly at the track to watch his own car in the California Sprint Car Civil War Series. It was not the one that crashed.

Wondergem was pronounced dead at the scene, and the teen later died at the hospital. The Yuba County Sheriff Department is investigating the cause of the accident, which may have been caused by the steering wheel becoming detached.

Wondergem reportedly moved to California in 1966, after a stint in the Air Force.
