Fire in Oakfield Township

-N-Fire-Oakfield1--Holmden-CtFirefighters in northern Kent County spent several hours at the scene of a fire in Oakfield Township Friday, March 8.

According to Oakfield Fire Chief Don Riker, the fire began around 12:30 p.m., Friday, March 8, on Holmden Ct., south of 14 Mile Rd, and east of Wabasis. Three fire departments assisted Oakfield Fire Department on the scene, including Courtland, Spencer, and Grattan. They cleared about 4 p.m.

-N-Fire-Oakfield2-Holmden-CtRiker said a fire inspection Tuesday confirmed that the fire started in the furnace, and traveled to the upstairs. He said it went through the ductwork and caught the couch in the front room on fire, then ruptured the bay window. The fire then traveled outside and up the house, and into the second floor.

The home was a total loss for the family of six, who was renting the house. The mom and at least one of the children were home at the time. There were no injuries to either the residents or firefighters.
