P.J. Hoffmaster State Park and the Gillette Nature Association will host the annual Turkey Day event Saturday, Nov. 3, and have added a new twist this year by kicking off the day with the first-ever Turkey Trail 5K Run.
The challenging 5K run through the sand dunes of Lake Michigan will begin at 9 a.m., at the park’s day beach parking area and will finish at the Gillette Visitor Center. Those interested in pre-registering for the race may do so online at www.gillettenature.org or www.goracego.com. Early registration is $25. Late registrations will be accepted Nov. 1-3 with a fee of $30. Runners may also register at the Gillette Visitor Center Nov. 1-2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or on-site on race day at the day beach bathhouse beginning at 7:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to first through third place in 14 age groups, including one for best-dressed turkey.
There will also be a 1-mile Little Turkey Trot for children at 10:30 a.m. Registration is free for the Little Turkey Trot; registration opens at the Gillette Visitor Center at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3. All Turkey Trotters must be accompanied by an adult. Turkey Day activities will be held at the Gillette Visitor Center following the completion of the Little Turkey Trot.
