Gas station demolished

The former Speedway gas station, at 333 S. Main Street, near Morley Park, was torn down last week.

The gas station, which was closed June 30, 2009, due to poor economics, thrived for 38 years. But business dropped off, and customers dropped off considerably once construction started on S. Main St., in front of the business, forcing it to close. The property has been for sale ever since.

It was a Checkers gas station, when Speedway bought it in 1971. Fred Gunnell wrote in an article for the Post a couple of years ago that he remembers when a Sunoco station was there.

Shane Pochard, of Marathon Petroleum Corporation, said that the property remains for sale and that the fuel tanks were removed quite some time ago.
