Golf with Friends, the Benefit hosted by The Friends of the Cedar Springs Public Library, got off to a great start Saturday, September 29, with great weather and the promise of a new 2013 Malibu for a hole-in-one over on Hole #17. The weather was perfect and the 18 Hole Scramble felt like a color tour of the beautiful Cedar Chase Golf course.
Five teams participated. Two complete amateurs were on board, including Library Director Donna Clark. “I’m so glad it was only my team who witnessed my efforts,” remarked Clark. “I managed to have a marvelous time in spite of hacking the ground and slashing the air.”
The winning team with 6 under par was Russ Cole, Gary Bailey, Scott Phillips and Bob Wojezynski. The last place team was 9 over par with Donna Clark, Library Board Trustee Becky Powell, former School Board President Carolee Cole and Cedar Chase Rover Ray Gordon.
Ed Koehn Chevrolet donated a chance to win a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. Collision Operations Manager Jack Price drove the Malibu to Cedar Chase with his son, Ryan, and wondered if they would have to hitch a ride home. But it was a long shot, one that is awaiting some lucky person next year.
Even with so few teams, the Friends still made $845.60 toward the $50,000 Match/Challenge for a new library. Friends President Kim Gillow and Secretary Christine McFarlane were both really pleased with the outcome. Both look forward to building the FUNdraiser to at least 20 teams next year. “We want to make this an annual event,” commented Chris McFarlane, the main organizer of the golf outing this year. They are looking at a possible August date.
