Fourteen Cedar Springs area juniors vied for the title of 2012 Red Flannel Queen last Saturday evening, September 29, at Cedar Springs High School. Winning this year’s top honor was Dani George, daughter of Daniel and Debi George, and Barbara Mull. Dani is a student at Creative Technologies Academy. Her 2012 Red Flannel Court includes two Cedar Springs High School students: Jordyn Nichols, daughter of JD and Brook Nichols, and Kellie Spahr, daughter of Gary and Sue Spahr.
Miss Congeniality, an award judged by the other contestants, was given to Aiyana Plank, daughter of Scott and Lori Plank. She won a beautiful sterling silver bracelet from Daniel J. Reynolds, Jeweler.
The opening ceremonies were done by the American Legion Glen Hill Post #283 Color Guard, and the national anthem was sung by 6-year-old Kacie Platz, of Sand Lake. Kacie is the daughter of Tim and Deana Platz, and has sung at several venues, including the White Caps, Sand Lake Fourth of July Festival, and Tri County basketball game.
Shelley Irwin, WGVSU television and radio personality, was Mistress of Ceremonies.
“Red Flannel Queen Scholarship Pageant Director Cindy Patin and her team of volunteers did a truly outstanding job!” said Festival 2nd Vice President Rose Coonen.
“This production takes many hours of planning and rehearsal.”
The opening dance number, led by Sleeping Dog Yoga professional dancers, also featured a Father/Daughter contestant dance, with all of the young ladies dancing in their red flannel long nightgowns with their Dads.
There was also fantastic entertainment by The Claddagh Clan, an Irish Dance Performance Group from the Rockford/Grand Rapids area featuring local high school students.
