The boy with the green thumb

It seems that 12-year-old Isaiah Shears, of Cedar Springs, can plant anything anywhere and it just grows. This year he even surprised himself when his sunflower measured a whopping 15-feet-1-inch tall! Its huge leaves are 16 inches across, and 16 inches long. The stalk at its thickest is 6-1/2 inches around.

Isaiah is proud of his sunflower, and excited about breaking his own record next year by getting an earlier start!

He wondered if anyone knew the world’s record for the tallest sunflower. We checked out the Guinness Book of World Records online and found this:

“The tallest sunflower was 8.03 m (26 ft 4 in) tall when measured in Kaarst-Voorst, Germany, on 17 August 2009 and belongs to Hans-Peter Schiffer (Germany).Hans-Peter is a flight attendant with Lufthansa. The sunflower was confirmed as Helianthus annuus.”

We would love to see what you grow next year, Isaiah!
