For the last five years, while most kids are soaking up the sun and enjoying their last weekend of summer, the Boys’ U14 CASSA team has been playing soccer in the Michigan International Labor Day cup. Last year, as a U13 team, they took runner-up in the in the U14 division with a disappointing loss to VARDAR in the last two seconds of game time. But this year was different.
CASSA went undefeated in the tournament, scoring at total of 14 goals against the opposing teams. The first game they played against Tri-City Ludington, with a victory of 3-0. For their second game of the tournament, they faced Costa United, whom they beat 4-2. In the semifinals, against the same VARDAR team that beat them last year, CASSA won 4-2 to advance to the finals. Because of the bracketing system, CASSA went up against Ludington again for the Championship.
Although Ludington picked up a few new players for the final game, they were still no match for CASSA. CASSA scored the winning goal in the last couple minutes of play, leaving the final score 3-2 and the CASSA Tri-Hawks the 2012 MILD Cup Champions. The U14 girls were also the champions in their division and the U11 girls were runners-up in the U12 division. Go CASSA!
