Ultralite hits power line

An Ultralite glider crashed Sunday night in Tyrone Township, after hitting a power line.

According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, Mark William Kruithoff, 46, of Tyrone Township, took off Sunday evening about 9:15 p.m., westbound from Chary Glen Dr., a private road. The glider was unable to get high enough and struck a power line that went across Fruit Ridge Ave. The glider then wrapped itself around another power line and fell to the ground.

Both the pilot and a rear seat passenger, Luke Christopher Hillbrand, 29, of Kent City, were seat-belted and able to get out on their own.

Kruithoff suffered a deep laceration to his face and was transported to Butterworth by Rockford ambulance. Hillbrand had several small cuts.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Also assisting at the scene was Kent City Fire, and Consumers Power.
