Charges pending in hit and run

The investigation into a hit and run that took the life of Tyler Helton, 20, of Sand Lake, on April 21 is still pending. Trooper Hunt, of the Michigan State Police Lakeview, said he plans to get charges sent to the prosecutor by the end of the week for review.

Helton was walking along Stanton Road in Pierson Township, when a truck struck him about 9:12 p.m., April 21. The truck left the scene, but a 57-year-old Howard City man turned himself in the next morning when he saw the news reports. They believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

According to Trooper Hunt, Helton was not riding a bicycle, as had been reported by some media, (including this paper). ā€œIā€™m not sure where that information came from,ā€ he said. We apologize for the error.
