On Tuesday, September 13, at the Red Hawk stadium, the Cedar Springs boys varsity team faced off against the visiting Belding Redskins. The Red Hawks jumped into a quick lead when Kyle Szirovecz booted the ball into the net within seconds of the whistle (39:20). Closing out the first half, the score was 1-1, but that quickly changed shortly into the second half when Cedar Springs player Aaron Dault blasted the ball over the head of the keeper (37:06). Robert Klein positioned himself out in front of the net and connected with an air ball crossed over from Szirovecz, heading the ball into the corner of the net for a third Red Hawk goal. With 25 minutes left on the clock, Dault once again slipped the ball past the keeper giving the Red Hawks a 4-1 victory over the Redskins.
The Red Hawks traveled to the west side of Grand Rapids on Thursday, September 15, to challenge OK-Blue Conference rival West Catholic. It was evident that both teams entered the contest prepared for the high level of intensity that ensued throughout the entire match. The only Red Hawk goal was credited to forward Kyle Szirovecz, who fired a free kick past the West Catholic goal tender. The Red Hawk squad pushed the ball downfield but was unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities and fell to their opponent 3 to 1.
“As we look forward, we are focused on the things we need to do to continue to become a better team,” remarked Coach Kyle Avink.
Come show your Red Hawk pride this season and cheer on the soccer teams!
