Girls Track finishes in top spots at Pioneer Classic, Daily News meet

Pioneer Classic track meetThe girls track team traveled to Big Rapids Friday, May 27, to compete in the Pioneer Classic Track Meet at Top Taggert Field at Ferris State University. Katie Weiler took home two first places and a second place. Katie won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and was second in the 800 meter run. Katie also teamed with Sommer VanDyke, Caitlin McClurken, and Maddie Pekrul for a third place finish in the 3200 meter relay.

Amber TerHaar placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.  Sommer VanDyke placed second in the 1600 meter run and third in the 800 meter run.  Aly Hamilton place second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meter dash. The teams 400 meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Olivia Finch, Abby VanDusen, and Aly Hamilton took third.  Also placing third was the 1600 meter relay team of Allie Veltkamp, Abby VanDusen, Rieley Hondalus, and Sommer VanDyke.

Placing fifth were Kayla Ovokaitys in the 1600 meter run, Allie Veltkamp in the 400 meter dash and Maddie Pekrul in the 3200 meter run.  Placing sixth was Abby VanDusen in the long jump and Jessica Titus in the 3200 meter run.Daily News track meetThe girls track team traveled to Greenville on Tuesday May 31 for the Daily News Track Meet.  Freshman Aly Hamilton led the way for the Red Hawks with three first place finishes.  Aly won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and teamed with Rieley Hondalus, Olivia Finch, and Abby VanDusen to win the 400 meter relay.  Senior Amber TerHaar won the discus and the 3200 meter relay team of Caitlin McClurken, Kayla Ovokaitys, Maddie Pekrul and Sommer Van dyke also took first places.

Taking second places were Abby Vandusen in the long jump, Amber TerHaar in the shot put, Jessica Titus in the 3200 meter run, and Katie Weiler in the 800 meter run. Third places were earned by Kayla Ovokaitys in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and the 1600 meter relay team of Allie Veltkamp, Caitlin McClurken, Abby VanDusen and Rieley Hondalus.

The team closes out the season Saturday June 4, at the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids. Katie Weiler will compete in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Amber TerHaar will compete in the discus and shot put.  Both Katie and Amber are rated high in their events and have a good chance to place in the meet.
