Heart breaking week for JV Lady Red Hawks

The JV lady Red Hawks traveled to West Ottawa and Forest Hills Northern last week and suffered two heartbreaking losses.
On Tuesday February 15, the JV lady Red Hawks played the Panthers of West Ottawa. The first quarter stayed even with 3 lead changes and the score tied 4 times with the quarter ending with the Red Hawks leading 12 -8. West Ottawa came on strong in the second scoring 15 points to Cedar Springs 10 points and took the lead into halftime 23-22.
The game remained close in the third but the Red Hawks were still behind 31-29 at the end of the quarter. The JV Red Hawks fought hard in the fourth quarter but fell to the Panthers by a heartbreaking one point with a final score of 40-39.
Another balanced scoring attack saw Sommer VanDyke, Allie Veltkamp, Tamar Clark, Jeanette Sukstas and Abby VanDusen scoring for the JV lady Red Hawks. Jeanette Sukstas and Tamar Clark both pulled down double-digit rebounds for Cedar Springs.
The JV Lady Red Hawks then traveled to Forest Hills Northern on Thursday February 17. Both teams came out fast and ready to score with the first quarter ending with the lady Red Hawks leading 13-12. With the second quarter close and the teams tying the score 3 times they took the halftime buzzer all tied up at 22 points.
The close scoring continued in the third quarter with two more lead changes and another tied score but Forest Hills held the lead at the end of the quarter 31-30. The lady Red Hawks took the lead 36-33 part way through the fourth quarter but fell short of the victory by one basket. The final score was Forest Hills Northern 39 and Cedar Springs 37.
Leading scorer for the JV Lady Red Hawks was Sommer VanDyke followed by Tamar Clark, Jeanette Sukstas, Allie VeltKamp and Abby VanDusen. Shaelyn Fasel, Molly Caniff and Sirena Johnson also had good playing time for the Red Hawks.
The JV Lady Rehawks are scheduled to host Comstock Park on Tuesday February 22 and they have a make up game with West Catholic on Wednesday February 23 and will travel to Belding on Friday February 25.
