Specialty dietician renews diabetes educator status

United Lifestyles diabetes program provides support and education to community

GREENVILLE, MI –The National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Renee DeFrang RD CDE, Specialty Dietitian at United Lifestyles, Spectrum Health United Memorial, has renewed the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status by successfully completing the continuing education renewal option process.

Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be eligible for certification. Achieving CDE credential demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality care for people with diabetes.

Renee DeFrang has been with United Lifestyles for seven years and partners with individuals who have diabetes to better manage their disease.

United Lifestyles, located in Greenville, offers diabetes care and education services that promote self-management, blood glucose control, meal planning and prevention of acute and long-term complications. Instruction is provided by certified diabetes educators.

United Lifestyles is a partner with Spectrum Health Diabetes Services. This educational program provides tools necessary for blood sugar management, including insulin training, glucose monitor training, meal planning, and exercise planning. Clients may self refer or be referred by physician. Class instruction

includes the following:

• Learning to live with diabetes

• Meal planning with a registered dietitian

• Medications

• Self-monitoring

• Short-term and long-term complications

• Physical activity and exercise

• Sick day care

• Reduction of risk factors

• Stress management

• Weight management

• Lifestyle changes

As an American Diabetes Association (ADA) and State certified program, United Lifestyles participates with most insurance companies. Most insurance companies will cover part or all of the costs with a physician referral. An individual appointment with a diabetes educator is encouraged to determine educational needs prior to the class. One-on-one follow up and refresher courses are available after completion of initial diabetes education.
