The hay wagon was partially blocking the southbound lane.

The Continental struck theĀ  hay wagon with the passenger side of the vehicle, critically injuring 17-year-old Chasta Kaye Smith, 17. She was transported to Spectrum Butterworth by Aeromed with a closed head injury. The driver was not injured. A rear passenger, also named Jon David Wassenaar, 23, of Jenison, suffered lacerations to his chest.

The pickup hauling the hay wagon was not occupied.
